Max Holm is a jazz pianist, composer, producer, arranger and educator.
He attended the Berklee College of Music as one of the elite few Presidential Scholars, and was soon accepted into the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Max received his Bachelor of Music degree in Professional Music with triple concentrations in performance, composing and production in 2020, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Over the years he’s amassed numerous awards, including Outstanding Jazz Piano Soloist from Downbeat Magazine, Outstanding Jazz Piano Soloist at the Essentially Ellington Competition at Lincoln Center, Outstanding Jazz Piano from Yamaha Young Artists Competition, and many more.

15 years ago I died and was saved by 7 blood transfusions. After that I became obsessed with learning to play jazz. Did jazz musicians go in together one day to donate blood?

Improv Like a Pro

Rhythm is king. Notes are secondary.

In this example I play through the chords over the Bridge of Rhythm Changes using the scale of the dominant chord. But I'm taking it a step further by starting on different beats of the measure. Honing in on rhythm is a key part of what makes the phrasing unique.

Improvising like a "Pro" really comes down to applying rhythm to whatever you're playing and doing it confidently.

10 years today, Berklee gave me a full scholarship, then offered me a Presidential Scholarship - for which you can't apply. You have to be nominated by a Berklee committee.

The Presidential Scholarship meant that I didn't have to pay a penny for anything.

All fees, new MacBook, software - everything was included. What a blessing! And a great time in my life!

Out of thousands of applicants - over 4,000 that year - they chose 7 of us to be Presidential Scholars.

Fun fact:   and I came in as Presidential Scholars at the same time.

Those were great years in my life, for which I will always be grateful.
