Today is , which celebrates transgender and non-binary people and raises awareness of issues that are faced by trans people worldwide 🏳️⚧️ Today and throughout the weekend, we’ll be featuring trans and non-binary individuals who work in the thriving Kendall Whittier community.
First up, it’s Jess DiPesa of Gts Tulsa! 🎸
Jess grew up in the Tulsa area and started playing bass guitar at age 12, then quickly started modifying and experimenting with her musical instruments. She studied broadcasting at Rogers State University in Claremore, and music and luthiery at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA.
After a short stint at the Fender guitar factory in Corona, CA, and a U.S. tour working as a guitar tech, she landed back in Tulsa, working at Tulsa Guitar and Electronics from ‘07 to ‘13. In July of 2013, Jess and her business partners, Steve Hickerson and Brad James, opened Guitar Technical Services, a dedicated guitar repair shop in historic Kendall Whittier. Jess continues to play bass in town with multiple projects, including her group . You can find Bronco Henryetta playing gigs at iconic venues all over town, including Thelmas Peach and The Whittier Bar!
“I started my transition at the same time that we opened GTS and came out at work in 2015. My business partners and the vast majority of our clients surprised me with their kindness and support. I love working in Kendall-Whittier and living in Tulsa and have been able to build a career and reputation. Without gender affirming care I would not be here, and if I lose the ability to get that care, I would not be able to stay. But for now, I plan to stay and work to secure our rights in Oklahoma.”
