John Denver wasn't born in Oklahoma, but its where both sides of his family were from! His father, Henry John Deutschendorf, Sr. was from Wash*ta County south of Clinton, Oklahoma and his mother, Erma Louise Swope was from Tulsa. They were married in Claremore in February of 1942.

John Denver's father, the son of Russian German immigrants, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in June of 1943, which brought him to the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico. And, that's where his son, Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., was born in December of 1943. Or, John Denver, as we know him.

With both sides of his family being Okies, John Denver spent a lot of time in Oklahoma, working summers at the old family farm. When he was around twelve years old, his grandmother gave him his first guitar. Denver would later say that some of his happiest memories of his childhood came from summers spent in Oklahoma.

Did you know that November is National Homelessness Awareness Month❓

In Tulsa, there are around 1,300 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. We’re shining a light on the challenges faced by our neighbors experiencing homelessness and the small actions we can take to make a big impact. As we walk alongside and care for our friends, ensuring dignity for all is our goalβ€”not just in providing essentials, but in building a community where everyone is known.

Next week, we’ll be launching our Dignity For All campaign, and we invite you to consider joining us in our commitment to restore hope and dignity for our neighbors. Your support makes all the difference! πŸ’™

Excited to announce today that we have closed on the old State Farm campus in East Tulsa and will repurpose it as the City of Tulsa’s new public safety center!

For years, public safety leadership has been asked to worked in crumbling facilities. The water in Police HQ that comes out of the tap is brown. In Fire HQ, they have to abandon their building any time water gets too high in the Arkansas River because it is in a flood plain. Same for the facility that maintains our fire trucks. And Tulsa Area Emergency Management - the team that leads our response to natural disasters - works out of a moldy basement with unreliable heating and air.

I know that if my fellow Tulsans - who love our first responders - had seen these conditions firsthand they would’ve been as embarrassed and outraged as the City Council and I were. Thanks to voters who approved Improve Our Tulsa last summer, these conditions will be a thing of the past.

Our new Public Safety Center will bring together those who keep us safe for better collaboration in better working conditions: Tulsa Fire Department HQ; Tulsa Police Department HQ; Tulsa Police Mingo Valley Division; Tulsa Area Emergency Management; and City Medical will all be relocated to this center. Additionally, the City will build a modern maintenance facility for Fire trucks and Police cruisers.

All of this to say: thank you Tulsa for supporting the men and women who keep our city safe!

An exciting new sculpture has been unveiled at Tulsa's Air and Space Museum.

This morning we dedicated this beautiful piece of public art in honor of the men and women at the Oklahoma Air National Guard 138th Fighter Wing and in remembrance of Tech Sergeant Marshal Roberts. Housed in front of the Tulsa Air & Space Museum, this sculpture was funded as part of the Vision Tulsa program which built a new simulator facility for combat pilot training.

Thank you Tulsa for investing in facilities that support the men and women who keep us free, and for continually finding new ways to honor them! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
