During the Moundville Native American Festival (October 1-3, 2026), visitors can discover how crawfish survive in the rivers, streams, and wetlands of Alabama. Through hands-on activities, participants will build a crawfish burrow, explore the importance of clean freshwater habitats, and learn how shelter, food, and water help crawfish thrive.

In collaboration with the UA Cuba Center, the Gorgas House Museum will host a closing reception for our exhibit, “Clara Maass: She Gave Her Life” on September 25, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. During the reception, there will be a brief presentation on the Yellow Fever Commission’s work in Cuba, providing historical and scientific context for Clara Maass’s role in the experiments.

Admission is free and Cuban treats will be provided.

The Moundville Native American Festival returns to Tuscaloosa County next week for its 38th year, and this time the star of the show is the crawfish.

Moundville Archaeological Park and the Jones Museum, both part of the University of Alabama, host the festival Oct. 1-3.

This year's theme is "Year of the Crawfish: Big Changes Start with Small Beings," built around the idea that small creatures, and small actions, matter more than their size suggests.
