Congratulations to 2026 alums Nate Billings and Charlotte Gale on having their film “The Chukker: A Nation of Misfits” accepted into the Sidewalk Film Festival. This film, which started in JCM 318 (Documentary Storytelling), is the story of a former staple of Tuscaloosa nightlife from the people who loved it most.

It will screen August 30th at 10 AM.

According to Nate, “This film started off as a senior year class project. When I first started, I thought this would be a simple story about a bar. I was not expecting how large of a community this bar had. While working on the film, I kept meeting members of the community who wanted to help and were excited to see the film. After graduating I wanted to keep working on the film and turn it into something that Chukker Nation would really enjoy.”

JCM in LA was a hit! Ten students got a firsthand look at the entertainment business by hearing from industry professionals and visiting companies, including Disney, Blumhouse and the Clippers. Thank you to all of our hosts, guest speakers and alums who helped make it happen!

This month Dr. Elliot Panek gave a talk at The Amsterdam School of Communication Research at The University of Amsterdam, which is one of the top ranked communication research programs in the world. The talk was a preview of his upcoming book “Phantom Publics: How We Perceive Social Reality Online,” to be published by Bloomsbury in 2027.

It was great to see so many JCM folks at the BEA (Broadcast Education Association) conference in Las Vegas. Slide1: C&IS PhD student Zainuddin Muda Zainuddin Monggilo presented a Student Research-in-Progress Digital Poster on his work: “From Reactance to Resilience: A Systematic Review of Inoculation Theory in Digital Advertising and Public Relations.”

Slide2: Dr. Chandra Clark participated in the panel: “Community News and Student Reporting University led student reporting programs provide high impact learning experiences for students AND trusted sources of information for local communities.” In these programs student reporters (generally though classes or managed internships) cover local communities and their content is shared with media partners or distributed directly. These are programs where professionals edit and vet the student work and work with media partners to provide stories to meet local needs and to journalism standards.

Slide 3: Dr. Andy Billings presented “How Media Shapes the Mainstreaming of Sports Gambling: A Beyond Sports Initiative Discussion”

One of the four main focus areas of the University of Alabama’s Beyond Sports Initiative focuses on the role sports gambling/gaming plays in modern society. This panel focused on past findings and future investigations in the area, ranging from connections between betting and media dependency, the ubiquitous nature of sports media advertising/sponsorship, and the development of a sports betting addiction scale.

JCM faculty and sports journalist Lars Anderson is releasing his latest book this fall entitled “Brady.” The book details the life and background of the football great Tom Brady.

According to people magazine, “Pulled from years of reporting and over 350 interviews with people in Brady’s circle, Brady paints a ‘detailed psychological portrait’ of the Super Bowl champion, who announced his NFL retirement in 2023.”

In an interview with PEOPLE, Lars Anderson stated: “Numerous books have been written about different aspects of Tom Brady’s career, but no one has authored the definitive biography on him: a meaty, deeply reported narrative that gives readers a 360-degree view of his iconic life. This was the goal as I spent two years digging into the bedrocks of Brady to explain him, interpret his story and answer the fundamental question of who he really is.”

The book releases this fall!
