The second season of the "White Lies" podcast is out now! This Pulitzer-nominated podcast is done by none other than JCM faculty members Chip Brantley and Andrew Beck Grace. The second season, "White Lies: Man on the Roof" chronicles an Alabama Prison Riot of 1991, in which 120 Cuban detainees took over a prison in Talladega. The issues explored in this season echo current headlines and provide historical context to the ongoing immigration crisis. Listen below:

Congratulations to JCM faculty members Dr. Andy Billings and Dr. Scott Parrott, whose new book "Head Game: Mental Health in Sports Media" has been released. "Head Game" highlights the crucial importance of such disclosures in challenging the context of professional sport where athletes are trained to be "tough" from a young age and any mental illness could translate into reduced playing time and even harassment.

We have amazing faculty here Congratulations to Dr. Andy Billings on receiving the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) Research Fellow Award this weekend. This competitive award is given to scholars with continuous and high quality scholarship. Dr. Billings’ is the Executive Director of the Alabama Program in Sports Communication and Ronald Reagan Chair of Broadcasting in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media. His research interests lie in the intersection of sport, mass media, consumption habits, and identity-laden content.

The next Alabama Program in Sports Communication event will be this Thursday, October 13 at 3:30 in Autherine Lucy Hall 118! They will be offering a panel on “Covering Concussion Risk in Sports Media.” This will be followed by media training on the issue at 4:45 (same room) with Brandon Boyd of the Concussion Legacy Foundation.

Both are free and open to the public.
