Happy Trans Day of Visibility!

We hope today inspires people to not just learn about Trans history and culture but also Trans oppression.

We could post all the statistics about the short lifespans of trans people, we could post a hundred links to corporations who are helping from within the system, but we're not.

The statistics are important.

The organizations are helpful.

the hotlines are necessary!

But none of those things are going to help a trans person more significantly or directly than your own supportive relationship with them. When conversations are happening and transgender *individuals* are able to communicate what they need, and those needs are being focused on and supported (and then multiplied by the number of trans people supported by relationships like this) the net gain is incalcuable.

We chose to highlight Buy a Trans Women a Pizza as an opportunity to start those conversations and physically engage with meeting the needs of someone in your community, but the ultimate goal is to meet the actual needs of individuals. There is no one-size solution to the many ways trans people are oppressed, othered and abused.

Please join conversations today, crlebrate, and learn what ways we can support one another in real meaningful ways.

To the Trans people of this world,

we love you!

Happy Trans Day of Visibility!

Mira Bellweather is the author of "Fu***ng Trans Women" and an activist for transfeminism and s*x education, for and about trans women. She passed away tragically in 2022 from lung cancer.

March 31st is her birthday, and has been declared by her friends, family, and supporters as "Buy a Trans Woman a Pizza Day!" Mira was a disabled trans woman who did so much for her community, and it would mean a lot if allies of all stripes and walks of life would participate and buy a pizza (or whatever she likes most) for a trans woman in your life.

Many people are willing to post sentiments like "love every trans woman before it's too late" and this is a genuine opportunity to do so! We hope you'll join us in honoring Mira Bellweather and trans women.

We would also love for you to share a photo with your story for us to combine into an article to share with the community. Please send your story and/or photos to any of Diverse Studio's SM, or email us at [email protected]

and happy Buy a Trans Woman a Pizza day March 31st!

Whether you're a pro or a hobbyist, the most important part of any skill is to practice. When it comes to photography, that practice can become a fun and rewarding part of your day, but it does come with its hurdles. I think a lot of people who are into photography sometimes get caught up in obsessing over The Rules. Making sure none of your white, shadow or colors are washed out; framing, pacing, visual weight... it goes on and on (and for good reason!) Those elements, when understood and curated can have incredible results! There is a satisfaction in nailing a shot when you know all your elements have been achieved exactly how you envisioned. Thats a hard feeling to describe. And yet, in the AI era there has been a leveling of the technical skill gap that may be required to achieve many of those elements. The pros and cons of that are a different discussion, but what I want to focus on today is the counter-balance thats growing in many media formats towards a more raw, unpolished, more "human" expression. Ive found myself more interested in the imperfect. To challenge myself I decided to break The Rules and practice taking more photos in my day-to-day and let the moment stand on its own. This is one way Ive been able to introduce more opportunity to practice my skills while exploring the artform in a more organic way, even without my best equipment on hand, utilizing whats available in the moment instead.

Im still a sucker for order and modularity, so I compiled them into a sort of Polaroid-style templates with digital handwritten titles on them. Its a little rememiscent of the "Inspirational Posters" that adorned school counselor office walls and early internet memes, but I still enjoy the implementation. I felt that it highlights the style by giving a context to the photo itself that adds to the casual vibe of these moments.

What are some fun ways you like to experiment and break the rules in your hobbies? Let us know in the comments below!

Happy History Monday! Today we're learning about Phyllis Lyon (pictured on the right, partner Del Martin on the left) Phyllis was born Nov 10th 1924 in Tulsa Oklahoma. Her life's work has been among the most notable in modern western q***r history.
Full lesson below!

1924 -
PHYLLIS LYON, Le***an activist, born (d: 2020); Phyllis Lyon was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She held a degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, earned in 1946. During the 1940s, she worked as a reporter for the Chico Enterprise-Record, and during the 1950s, she worked as part of the editorial staff of two Seattle magazines.
Her name was almost always paired with that of her late partner, Del Martin. Martin and Lyon met in Seattle in 1950 when they began working for the same magazine. They became lovers in 1952 and entered into a formal partnership in 1953 when they moved to San Francisco together although technically unable to legally marry.
On February 12. 2004, Martin and Lyon were granted the first marriage license given to a same-s*x couple in the United States. The license was granted in violation of California state law by the City and County of San Francisco after mayor Gavin Newsom ordered that marriage licenses be given to same-s*x couples who requested them. The licenses were voided on August 12, 2004.
In 1955, Martin and Lyon and six other Le***an women formed the Daughters of Bilitis, the first major Le***an organization in the United States. In 1956, DOB issued a twelve-page, mimeographed newsletter called The Ladder, edited by Lyon. Within five years of its origin, the Daughters of Bilitis had chapters around the country, including Chicago, New York, New Orleans, San Diego, Los Angeles, Detroit, Denver, Cleveland and Philadelphia. There were 500 subscribers to "The Ladder," but far more readers, as copies were circulated among women who were reluctant to put their names to a subscription list.
An "accommodationist" organization, soon to be closely associated with the Mattachine Society, a predominantly male homophile group, DOB became the first national Le***an society; and The Ladder, the first overtly Le***an journal, achieved national circulation. Because of the conservative climate of the 1950s, membership in DOB was secret, and Lyons used a pseudonym for her work on the first few issues of The Ladder. Martin took over editorship of the newsletter from 1960 to 1962, and was then replaced by other editors until the newsletter ended its connection with the Daughters of Bilitis in 1970.
Lyon and Martin remained leaders of the DOB until the late 1960s, when they were replaced by women who were perceived as more radical and who had different goals for the organization. The Daughters of Bilities disbanded not long after Martin and Lyon's leadership ended.
Martin and Lyon were active in the National Organization for Women (NOW) starting in 1967. Del Martin was the first openly Le***an woman elected to NOW. Lyon and Martin worked to combat the homophobia they perceived in NOW, and encouraged the National Board of Directors of NOW's 1971 resolution that Le***an issues were feminist issues.
Phyllis Lyon died in April 2020 of natural causes. She was pre-deceased by Del Martin in 2008.
