Mendocino and Lake counties practically invented "slow wine," a concept that mirrors "slow food": vino that's grown and processed with environmental sustainability and social responsibility in mind. The Slow Wine Guide USA, which was first published in 2018, features a greatly expanded “Mendocino & Other” section (which includes
Lake County) in its new 2025 edition. Redwood Valley-based wine writer Heidi Dickerson, editor of the local chapter of the book (pictured on the left), was instrumental in ensuring that 25 wineries from the area were included—compared to only five in the previous edition.
