Back Roads and Front Porches

Back Roads and Front Porches Back Roads and Front Porches celebrates nostalgic small-town America through local stories, community pride, and the everyday people who quietly give back.

You may remember back in November we did a Hometown Helper episode on Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and our daughter volunteers there. They are doing amazing work and can use our help.

Please get involved and if you want to see the video we will put the link in the comments.

One of the unexpected blessings of this journey has been the people we’ve met along the way.

Today we got to spend some time with John and Sue at Gettysburg Farm. They’ve been with Back Roads & Front Porches since the early days, and seeing Sue wearing a BRFP shirt absolutely made our day.

Thank you both for the encouragement and friendship. Moments like this remind us why we’re doing what we’re doing.

Today we’re heading out to film a story that means a little extra to us.

Many of you know Lassie came into our lives as a senior rescue. As we learned more about today’s destination, we discovered a connection that made us smile.

We’re going to keep the details under wraps for now, but we can’t wait to share this story with you in the weeks ahead.

Sometimes the best stories find a way of connecting lives you never expected.

Somebody was a little excited to hit the road this morning. 🐾

Lassie and I are headed out to film another Hometown Helper story for Back Roads & Front Porches. We can’t tell you much about this one just yet because the full episode is still a few weeks away, but we’re meeting someone who has spent years making a difference in the lives of others.

Those are the stories we’re slowing down to find this season.

For now, Lassie is just enjoying the truck ride and soaking up the adventure.

Stay tuned. ❤️

The last year has been a whirlwind.
Thousands of miles. Constant movement. Learning how to live this new chapter of life while also trying to build Back Roads & Front Porches into something meaningful.

And somewhere along the way, we realized something important:

We were moving so fast that we weren’t always giving ourselves time to truly know the people and places around us.

So this next season is going to look a little different.

We’re slowing down.
Staying longer.
Listening better.
And digging deeper into the stories that deserve more than a quick stop along the highway.

Because the heart of small-town America isn’t found in tourist attractions or checklists. It’s found in the hometown helpers. The people quietly serving their communities every single day without asking for attention in return.

Those are the stories we want to tell.

We’re excited for what’s ahead, and we’re grateful you’re riding these back roads with us.

— Bob, Mairi & Lassie

The other day we took Lassie to PetSmart for her first nail trim since adopting her from the shelter. We really weren’t sure how nervous she might be, but she handled it like a champ. ❤️

The groomer was incredibly patient with her, and afterward we let Lassie wander through the dog bone aisle to find herself a reward. Watching her confidently sniff every option made us smile the whole time. 🐾

It may seem like a small thing, but for a rescue dog learning that the world can be safe and kind, moments like this matter

We stepped out on the RV porch and saw the rolling hills this morning… and then last night—two geese leading their goslings across the pond.

Hard to beat moments like this.

Ever had a moment on the road that just made you stop and smile?

Our friends over at Living Our Dream Now are down in the Florida Keys right now—and it’s bringing back some great memories for us.

There’s a little place in Marathon called Conch Custard that just feels like everything the Keys are supposed to be… simple, local, and unforgettable.

If you’re heading that way, this is one of those stops you don’t skip. All their custard is made with natural ingredients no artificial dyes. I tried to convince Mairi it was eating healthy, lol.
