Fully autonomous drones with no human oversight have killed soldiers on the battlefield for the first time. This is according to a senior figure in the Ukrainian defence industry, marking a watershed moment in warfare.

The one-off test involved 10 AI-controlled “Terminator” drones on the front line of the Ukraine war. Russian soldiers were killed.

“We tried it,” says drone-maker Alexander Kokhanovskyy, who supplied the technology and spoke to New Scientist at a press event hosted by the Ukrainian embassy. “It’s a test. We never implemented it [more widely].”

Astrophysicist Carl Grillmair was shot dead on February 16, 2026, in front of his isolated home in the Mojave Desert, near Llano, California. 🔫

The 67-year-old researcher at the California Institute of Technology was known for his groundbreaking work on exoplanets and the structure of the Milky Way.

A lifelong astronomy enthusiast, he joined Caltech’s IPAC science center in 1997 and contributed to several projects involving the Spitzer Space Telescope. 🌌

Grillmair had chosen to live in the desert to enjoy perfectly clear night skies, where he had set up his own observatory with multiple telescopes.

But on February 16, his life came to a tragic end. According to authorities, 29-year-old Freddy Snyder showed up at his porch and shot him.

The two men reportedly did not know each other, and investigators have not yet identified a clear motive.

Weeks earlier, however, Snyder had already been arrested near Grillmair’s property with a loaded rifle, though the charges were later dropped.

Today, the scientist’s brutal death has shocked the Caltech community and residents of this usually quiet desert area. 😔

A mysterious case… that still leaves many unanswered questions.

“This was one of the most highly sophisticated thefts [the FBI] have seen in a long time, which is the main thing that has them so spooked."
