I watched Death of the Pastor’s Wife and I’ve been sitting with it ever since.
There is a lot about Mica Miller’s story that makes me angry. Spiritual manipulation. Abuse of authority. Shame used to silence. Scripture twisted to control. The instinct to protect a person, a position or a ministry when we should be protecting people.
But more than anything, it made me think about us. The Church.
Because I love the Church. I love Scripture. I believe in the power of prayer, marriage, forgiveness, grace and accountability.
And because I believe those things, I also believe we have to be willing to talk about what happens when they are distorted.
Prayer should never be an excuse for inaction when someone is in danger.
Submission should never require someone to surrender their safety or God-given worth.
Forgiveness does not mean abuse goes unchecked.
And protecting the reputation of a church or leader is not the same thing as protecting the Church.
One thing I especially don’t want lost in Mica’s story is her love for Jesus.
This was not a woman who simply walked away from her faith. By the accounts of those who loved her, Mica loved Jesus deeply, even while her faith and trust were being used against her.
That should break our hearts.
And it should make us ask what kind of Church we want to be.
I want us to be a Church where women are valued, where leaders are accountable, where Scripture is handled faithfully, where prayer leads us toward action and where someone can whisper “I’m not safe” and know they will not have to scream it before we listen.
