Alonzo and Lorenzo Riddick, fraternal twins from Hempstead, went through Fordham football practice with a shared sense of purpose and quiet seriousness, traits wholly appreciated by coach Joe Conlin and his staff.

“They’re fantastic young men,” Conlin said of the sophomores. “They have a tremendous work ethic. Both of them consistently stay out after practice. They are great teammates. Hard workers in the weight room. Doing very well in school. No issues. No disciplinary issues whatsoever.”

What intrigued Conlin's staff during their initial encounter in June 2024 was what they had seen on tape.

They knew Lorenzo, a defensive lineman, recorded 123 tackles, 21 sacks, and two fumble recoveries in 29 games at Long Island Lutheran High School. They knew Alonzo, a cornerback, totaled 177 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, and three fumble recoveries, twice winning Lutheran’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

It was hard to miss the best soccer player on the field at Valley Stream — No. 11 in the blue uniform, aka Joeyce Forero.

Forero was everywhere in the picture, delivering a career-high-tying four goals and one assist as a center midfielder and filling in defensively at sweeper in the second half.

This is the junior’s fourth varsity season, her third as a starter. She’s up to 12 goals and six assists, and her career totals are up to 51 goals and 31 assists.

As far as 138-pound wrestlers go, there's not a better one in the country than Shoreham’s Gavin Mangano.

Mangano, a 17-year-old senior at Shoreham-Wading River High School who is committed to Penn State, took over the nation’s top ranking in his weight class when he defeated Dean Anderson in FloWrestling’s prestigious “Who’s #1” invitational in Oklahoma.

Mangano — who entered the match ranked No. 2 — scored five consecutive points to defeat Anderson, 9-4, and claim the top ranking.

New outdoor courts at Hempstead High School are giving students a place to practice and compete for the tennis team on campus while serving as a venue for the sport's rapidly growing younger cousin, pickleball.

School officials showed off the six courts, which can be divided into 12 for pickleball. The old courts had fallen into disrepair over the past 15 years, forcing the boys and girls tennis teams to practice in nearby parks and play other schools elsewhere.

There is hope long-term that pickleball will rise to the level of tennis and other scholastic sports in competition with other Long Island high schools, the district’s athletics director said.

Daniella Correia always strives for greatness. However, that pursuit has come with its fair share of obstacles.

In a Carle Place girls' soccer win over Lynbrook, Correia believed she didn't play up to her standard because she didn't play at her best, as any athlete would. But rather than dwell on it and be down on herself, she decided to move forward.

The sophomore striker then scored five goals and dished out an assist to lead the Frogs to a 6-3 win over Wheatley, tying the school's all-time goals scored in a game with Leah Iglesias, who set it in 2018, according to Carle Place’s athletic director.

"I knew I had to change it up against Wheatley," Correia said. "Wheatley is a really good team, and there was a lot of pressure, but I like to play under pressure. It helps me push harder."

The Jericho High School football team is forfeiting the rest of its varsity games because it does not have enough healthy players to field a team, according to the execuitve director of Nassau County scholastic sports.

Jericho is the fourth school to drop football this season, joining Port Jefferson, Amityville, and Holy Trinity.

The Jayhawks started the season with 32 players but had to forfeit the season opener against New Hyde Park because not enough players met the state-required minimum of 10 practices.

Al Coppola clutched the Most Valuable Player Award from 1994 in his right hand. His wife, Joanne, stood by his side holding a bouquet of flowers in her right hand with the rest of the family to her left.

The parents of Scott Coppola were at midfield during a pregame ceremony honoring their son as one of Connetquot High School’s greatest three-sport athletes.

Scott Coppola, who died unexpectedly in August at the age of 49, was a football, basketball and baseball standout for the T-Birds. The Connetquot School District honored his athletic achievements, including a Long Island Class I football title, and his impact on the community before the Connetquot-Ward Melville football game on Friday.
