A mental health evaluation has been ordered this week for a man charged in a deadly Westmoreland County shooting. Daniel Moles is charged with criminal homicide in connection with the November 2021 killing at Woodpecker's Pub and Grub. 31 year old Randy Jenereaux died in the incident. Moles was previously found competent to stand trial in January of last year but his attorney says that determination needs to be revisited due to his client's history.

A new mid-fiscal-year report on the commonwealth's financial health says residents and lawmakers both should be alarmed about certain factors. The forecast from the top administrator for the state's Independent Fiscal Office says lower-income consumers are not in a very good position at this point. Wages are expected to decrease over three and a half percent as money from the federal government's stimulus funds, as well as emergency SNAP benefits, will soon come to an end. He also says, though, that the state is experiencing its lowest unemployment rate on record; it was at 4.0% for the 4th quarter of last year.

New legislation may change the way school boards operate in Pennsylvania. Democratic State Representative Joe Webster's proposals would repeal school board members not being able to be paid and would increase the number of training hours required. The bill also would provide free tuition at Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education institutions for specified courses related to being a school board member.

A woman is suing a Westmoreland County bar over an injury that has left her paralyzed. The litigation claims 55 year old Mary Jo Jordan was overserved alcohol at the Lone Star Inn in Bell Township two years ago, leading to a fall from a stool that caused serious spinal cord injuries. She is seeking an unspecified dollar amount in damages for her pain and suffering, and loss of future employment. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports an individual identified as a manager of the bar said she would not discuss the lawsuit earlier this week.

The makers of a brand of "artificial tears" eyedrops are recalling the product over potentially serious bacterial infections. Global Pharma Healthcare says their EzriCare eyedrops have been linked to bacteria that have caused permanent vision loss, with one death reported due to a bloodstream infection. There have been 55 cases of adverse reactions logged in 12 states so far, none of them in Pennsylvania. The CDC is urging consumers to stop using the drops immediately. The EzriCare product has been distributed nationwide, also under the Delsam Pharma brand name.

Authorities have announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with a Greensburg home invasion. Investigators report that on December 13th, Patrick Rosenberry broke into an Alwine Avenue home, attacked a man inside kicking out four of his teeth, and threatened the victim with a gun before getting away with a safe that contained thousands in cash and silver coins. Police recently learned that Jamal and Nicole Smith were hiding the suspect at a home on Arch Avenue. The trio have all now been arrested; Rosenberry on burglary and assault charges and the Smiths on charges of child endangerment.
Uniontown City Council passed three Ordinances on Thursday Night, upping bond requirements for City of Uniontown Elected Officials or Employees that handle finances, decreased the Treasurer’s compensation to 15 thousand dollars per year, beginning with the next elected term in 2024 and passed a resolution that cash payments will no longer be accepted in the Treasurer’s Office. The Ordinances stem from Uniontown City Treasurer Antoinette Hodge being charged in December with Theft by Unlawful Taking, Receiving Stolen Property, Theft by Failure to make Required Deposits of Funds, Misapplication of Entrusted Property, Obstruction of Administrative Law and Perjury after a forensic Audit Report revealed a loss of funds totaling $106,750 from the City Treasurers Office. Last month Council adopted Resolution 8 which in part requested Hodge’s resignation as Treasurer within 7 days. Solicitor Tim Witt said during public comment Thursday, that Hodge has not resigned within the requested time period and a letter was sent to various state level government officials for formal removal of Hodge as Treasurer pursuant to the third class city code.
In other business items Elaine Otterstrom was approved as Deputy Controller for the City.
Council also authorized meetings with the Sons of Italy for a planned Italian Festival in Uniontown tentatively scheduled for August 2023.
