WHO’S GOING TO WASH MY UNDERPANTS?
(MEMOIRS OF A SOLDIER IN THE 60’S AND 70’S) This is a true story of me the author as a young lad with no qualifications and very little prospects of ever getting a decent job, so I decided to join the army, much to the astonishment and amusement of all of my family and friends who thought that I would not get accepted and if I did then I would never pass the basic training as I was rather thin and had been a rather sickly child and looked like you could play a tune on my ribs and the title of the book comes from a question I asked my mother just prior to leaving for Aldershot, “Who’s going to wash my underpants” I will not bore you with her answer!!!
In 1965 most of the young men who joined up were either leaving the care system or trying to not serve down the mines like their fathers and grandfathers, escaping poverty or just a bit thick (like myself) and were looking for a better life and the opportunities to travel, with one of the lads telling me that he joined so that he could get a gun and shoot people, yes, we still had those type of people.
This book will put a smile on the faces of all veterans of the armed forces, it describes the banter, the total lack of any political correctness and the language used by service personnel and will bring back lots of memories most of which will be pleasant ones but of course there will also be some sad ones.
This book contains lots of humour and bear in mind that most of the jokes came from the 1960’s but of course you may have heard them many times but they were new to me at that time.
I must stress that this book is for adults and is not suitable for under 18’s.
This book takes you on a journey from Aldershot to Somerset, Catterick, Cyprus, Germany, Singapore, Kent and back to Germany and of course to Northern Ireland. It describes 5 months of hospital stays and how we would climb out of the day room window and go to the local off licence for some beers and hide the empty bottles outside of the window.
It includes my arrival in Singapore and eating loads of what we thought were chicken satay only to find out that it was in fact dog that we had been eating and I did not touch satay for many years after that and I am still a little suspicious to this day.
This book will not only appeal to serving or ex members of the British armed forces but also to service personnel from other country’s such as the U.S.A. Australia, New Zealand and Canada as the banter crosses borders and countries.
The army also gave me many opportunities that I would never have had in Civvie Street such as an Outward Bound Course, Free Fall Parachute Course and many other opportunities as described in the book and of course the many friends I made from all over the world and other foreign places such as Manchester and Newcastle!!!
