The Anishinaabe peoples established the “Three Fires” tribal groups consisting of the Ojibway (Chippawa)…the Odawa (Ottawa)…and the Potawatomi.

In 1819 Michigan Governor Lewis Cass signed the “Treaty of Saginaw” with the tribes and they relinquished 6 million acres of their land to the state of Michigan.
