I am a convert to Islam. After a few years of research and reflection, I took Shahada in 2019 after reading the opening lines of Surah TaHa: “We have not revealed the Qur’an to you (O Prophet) to cause you distress, but only as a reminder to those in awe (of Allah). A revelation from Him who created the Earth and the high heavens, the Most Merciful (who is) above the throne established.”
Since my conversion, I’ve reflected on these verses often. Practicing Islam in the West- especially keeping up the prayer- can feel difficult, burdensome, even. Whenever I find myself struggling with some aspect of my worship, I’ve found it helpful to remind myself that when God commands us in the Qur’an to pray, fast, or give alms, it’s not to make our lives hard. Islam is a beautiful gift to humanity from our Creator- a perfected guide to life and a straight path leading to Paradise.
