Since December 2024, James, Juanita and their four children have called The Inn, HumanKind Ministries’ year-round shelter, their temporary home.

“I love that at the end of the day, our family has a safe place to stay together at The Inn,” says Juanita.

Because of the stability they’ve found at The Inn, James and Juanita can focus on securing a better future for their family.

We live in a world where politics often dominates the conversation. But as we mourn this tragic loss of so many lives, I urge you not to use politics as a weapon—even when our leaders across the country do. Less than 24 hours ago, families eagerly awaited their children’s arrival at the airport. Yet, within minutes of landing, their world was shattered by an unimaginable nightmare. In this moment of grief, let’s focus on the profound loss and honor the lives taken too soon.

When Brent and I found out we were having twins our entire life was turned upside down. One way we really struggled was trying to find childcare for 2 infants.

Working in government and hearing from so many diverse industries, all saying the same thing, that childcare is affecting their workforce. I knew it was a significant issue. However, when it became personal to our family my husband decided he wanted to figure out how to help our community meet a critical need that's only 42% met today.

After a significant amount of work, he has created a new non-profit, OneCommunity, working to help not only employers attract and retain talent but also to help employees with affordable, quality childcare. I fully believe that OneCommunity's concept will change what childcare looks like in Sedgwick County.

So proud of you and the OneCommunity Board, Brent!

As we reflect on the sacrifices of our veterans, I am reminded of my husband who enlisted at the very young age of 17 years old. His journey, like that of many young men and women, was one of courage and commitment. They served with pride knowing they are part of something bigger than themselves, defending our freedoms as Americans.

Today we make it a point to thank all of our veterans and active duty military, but every single day we are grateful for their service and sacrifice. Happy Veteran's Day!

I am immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to serve my community over the last 4 years. We are only ever guaranteed one term and I knew I wanted to make my time count. I'm so proud of what we have done both internally and externally in that time. I have gained a deep appreciation for all public servants and what they do to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family. My reason to run for office was to make Sedgwick County a better place for my children and while I am not going to be able to finish all the projects I started, I know I was successful in that.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, I promise I'll get back to you. Thank you to everyone who works for Sedgwick County, keep being incredible people! I've been so fortunate to work alongside you and wouldn't trade the experience for anything. I'm looking forward to slowing down some and getting to spend more time with my family. I can't wait to see what comes next!

Today I am truly humbled by the overwhelming support from friends, family and community members the past few months. It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve the 2nd District these past four years. No matter the outcome today, I am incredibly proud of the work we've been able to accomplish over my first term in office. From improved county services, lowered mill levy, bringing a much needed regional mental health hospital to Sedgwick County, facilitated the most expansive juvenile criminal justice reform in county history, bringing in over $200 million in investment, creating over 600 jobs (majority of the last two in the 2nd District), to internal policies like the 8 week paid parental leave policy for both parents.
