Real talk about viral posts … what everyone THINKS they want.
One of my client’s posts hit 1 million views (and counting) this month. This isn’t the first time I’ve had a post go viral, but let me tell you why those viral posts aren’t always what they are cracked up to be:
▪️ The comment section gets toxic: more eyes mean more opinions, and unfortunately, a lot more negativity and unsolicited “feedback“ from strangers. It can be draining.
▪️ It drains resources: responding (or even moderating) thousands of comments and DM’s take serious time and energy away from other important tasks.
▪️ It often attracts the wrong audience: a viral post often pulls in people interested in that one specific piece of content, not necessarily your core brand or services.
▪️ The follower spike can be temporary: a huge boost in followers is exciting, but retention can be low. Many are just passing through.
▪️ You can’t always control the narrative: once a post takes off, it can be interpreted (or misinterpreted) in ways you never intended, completely out of your control.
While yes, I’ll always celebrate a post that gets great reach, I also appreciate the fact that consistent, value-driven content builds a truly engaged community. That’s where the real magic happens for sustainable growth. 🪄
