Federal funding is currently supporting 11 Clubs in Northeast Ohio. Loss of funding could lead to shuttered clubs and loss of programming for kids.

Federal funding cuts are set to hit local after-school programs, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.

On Friday, on Broadway Avenue in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood, youth from Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio’s (BGCNEO) Broadway Club called for a “Stop to the Violence.”

During a community event at the club, organized by the students and part of the Bigger Than Basketball program supported by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland-Cliffs and the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance, members of the Club called for an end to violence in the Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood.

This community of children felt passionately about putting on this program because they were personally touched by gun violence. A member of the BGCNEO program lost their life to gun violence this past school year. Many of the students said they had also lost family and friends to gun violence and they wanted to issue a call to action to “Stop The Violence.”

Late professional wrestler Tracy Smothers kept a day job most of his career to support what he called his “wrestling habit.” John Thorne understands this lifestyle well – by day, he works at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, but on evenings and weekends he’s better known as the founder of Cleveland’s Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW).

“It’s a pie chart life where you have to dedicate time to work, wrestling and a personal life,” says Thorne, a Brecksville native now living in Old Brooklyn. “I’m our travel agent, booker and accountant while going to my job Monday through Friday.”

Today, Thorne has helped build AIW into a mainstay of Cleveland’s independent scene, promoting several shows a month at venues across Northeast Ohio. Hundreds of dedicated fans follow the action at venues like Cleveland’s new concert hall, Globe Iron, which hosted AIW’s 20th-anniversary show in May.

For two decades, Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW) has delighted pro wrestling fans throughout Northeast Ohio. Learn how the promotion defied the odds and hit a special anniversary.

For individuals and families navigating the uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis, support can feel just out of reach. But The Gathering Place, a Cleveland-based nonprofit, looks to change that with the launch of HOPE: a 28-foot mobile outreach vehicle designed to bring essential services directly to those who need them most.

HOPE, which stands for Healing, Opportunities, Peace, and Empowerment, offers a fully customized experience on wheels. Inside the van, individuals can receive private consultations for many of The Gathering Place’s services, including professional wig fittings, at no cost.

“We are reaching people in the midst of their cancer journey, often at their most vulnerable, and showing up with resources, empathy and a commitment to walk beside them every step of the way,” said Michele Seyranian, CEO of The Gathering Place, who first envisioned the project after joining the organization in 2019. “We want to do all we can to enhance quality of life, that’s what we’re all about.”

The HOPE Mobile was designed to help close care gaps. By showing up in under-resourced neighborhoods and offering no-cost, high-quality support, the van is a form of health justice on wheels.

When Joseph Crichton arrives each morning at his busy Lakewood intersection, he dons his crossing guard vest, grabs a whistle and hand-held stop sign, and waits for the neighborhood children to show up.

First it’s high schoolers, a few stragglers walking or biking to beat the early morning bell. Next come the elementary students heading in the opposite direction, groups of youngsters who call Crichton “Mr. Joe.”

Without exception, Mr. Joe knows them all by name.

More than a year has now passed since Lakewood City Council voted to approve the Active Transportation and Safety Action plans, and many residents wonder: When can I expect to see changes that make my street safer?

In late May, the City of Cleveland launched its Age-Friendly Cleveland 2025-2028 Action Plan, a roadmap that was created in collaboration with multiple city departments and community organizations.

Spearheaded by the Cleveland Department of Aging, the plan is designed to reform outdoor spaces, civic participation, public transportation, emergency preparedness and community support and health services to make the city more accessible to senior residents by 2028.

A new shop in Lakewood is focused on a growing and popular book genre that is beginning to dominate bestseller lists across the globe: Romantasy, a genre blending fantasy and romance.

Nickie Lui opened Flame & Fable – which she believes is the only romantasy-focused book store in Ohio – in February, and quickly gained a loyal following online from Lui’s fun, quirky social media videos and posts.

With Flame & Fable, Lui’s goal was to create a space where women could come and talk about the books they read without feeling embarrassed. “I just really wanted to create a space where women and people who love romance and fantasy feel comfortable talking about their books,” said Lui.

Republicans muscled President Donald Trump’s tax and spending cut bill through the House on Thursday, the final step necessary to get the bill to his desk by the GOP’s self-imposed deadline of July 4th.

At nearly 900 pages, the legislation is a sprawling collection of tax breaks, spending cuts and other Republican priorities, including new money for national defense and deportations.

The case behind the U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide a decade ago is known as Obergefell v. Hodges, but the two Ohio men whose names became that title weren’t so at odds as it would seem, and are now friends.

One year after the Supreme Court’s June 26, 2015, decision, lead plaintiff Jim Obergefell was at an event for an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization when its former director asked if he wanted to meet Rick Hodges, who’d been the title defendant in his capacity as state health director in Ohio, one of the states challenged for not allowing same-sex couples to marry.

“I don’t know, you tell me. Do I want to meet Rick Hodges?” Obergefell recalls responding.

In 1911, John Jordan, a 19-year-old African American, was lynched by a white mob after being accused of stealing cherries off a tree on a white farmer’s orchard – making it one of the only documented lynchings in Cuyahoga County.

Now over 100 years later, Cleveland’s Black community is making sure the story is being told and remembered.
