Pacific NW Trip Log
Day 2 - Raton, NM to Granby Colorado
We woke up early in Raton, NM and rolled out at 8 am heading for Granby, Colorado. It was a wonderful drive heading into the mountains. We stopped for fuel and DEF in Monument, CO and had lunch in the coach. We checked our route and noticed an hour delay on I-70. We checked alternative routes and most of them added 1-2 hours to our trip. Our kids were in their camper 30 minutes ahead of us. We headed out and hit traffic around 1:30 PM.
For an hour or so it would creep forward now and then, but then by 2 PM, it was stopped completely. We had Starlink in-motion setup with the dish mounted on the roof, so we began to search for information online. It was then that we learned the interstate had just been shut down both directions in the mountains and there was no way to get out with our setup over 65 feet long.
As time went on, more and more people began exiting their vehicles and walking miles up the hill to try to see what was going on. Little to no cell service made information unavailable! People began urinating on the side of the road in full view of everyone else in desperation. It was also hot, about 90 degrees outside. We felt very lucky to be in our motorhome.
A trucker told us we would be forced to exit and turn back to Denver, which meant our route to Granby would be via a drive through the highest paved road in the US and straight through Rocky Mtn National Park. No way we would take that drive in the dark! We were getting worried about what our plan would be. It was July 3rd and I’m sure all RV parks nearby were fully booked.
At about 4 hours of waiting, cars began driving on the shoulder to exit, and we began to creep up toward that exit, but in the center lane. As we got closer, we realized we would have had to have been on the shoulder to exit and there were people sitting in 18 wheeler trucks at the closure point past the exit. We realized quickly we would be stopped until the interstate reopened, which was predicted to be 8-9 pm. At this point, our kids were ahead of us enough that they could take Highway 40 to Granby, which was not our plan due to the steep grades and switchbacks. They made it to the campground safely.
All of a sudden, the traffic ahead of us began to move. They opened up our section of I-70! We decided to also take highway 40 because we didn’t know if the Eisenhower Tunnel was open yet. Bryan kept the speed at 35 using the engine break and manual shifting to minimize using and burning up our air brakes. The system on the coach is way different than the true engine brake in the F-450, but he successfully and safely got us over the Berthoud Pass, which is 11,306 feet. After the stress of the day, this drive was the icing on the cake.
We arrived at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain safe and sound that evening, and were so ready to relax and enjoy the cooler weather! Our site is amazing and this park is one of the best family parks we have ever stayed in. We definitely recommend it!
