Day 5 - Granby, CO to Garryowen, MT

Just a normal travel day, which was amazing! We started the day off with church in Granby with our RVs, and then we said goodbye to our daughter, son in law and granddaughter as they continued their trip in one direction and we continued ours in another. We winded north from Granby and it was a pretty, but narrow and winding road. Bryan got lots of practice with the engine brake and manual down shifting to coast down the curves and passes without riding the air brakes. As we meandered through Colorado, then Wyoming, and into Montana, we enjoyed the confortable ride with the “picture screen” windshield. It was like watching a movie as we drove across the countryside. It was crazy how many bugs that windshield caught!

We arrived at 7th Camp RV Ranch much later than we had anticipated. They don’t allow late check-ins, so we had to arrive by 9 pm. We rolled in at 8:49! It was a beautiful park set on a hillside. We enjoyed the es**rt to our site and the peacefulness of the setting they created there. They also gave us complementary ice cream when we arrived! We definitely recommend as a nice park with long pull-through sites. We didn’t need to unhook our Jeep, which was fantastic since we were rolling out toward Glacier National Park the next morning! Another 480 mile drive day complete!

Day 4 - Granby, CO

This was our final day at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain. We woke up to clear skies and decided it would be a great day for riding bikes on the nearby trails as well as paddleboarding. There are a lot of bike trails around Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain.

As we were inflating the iSUPs, one popped. Glad that didn’t happen in the middle of the lake! The seam gave way. Since we now only have 2, it didn’t make sense to travel far to paddleboard, so we opted to use the lake at the RV park. It was actually perfect and easy! We even got our 16 month old granddaughter out on the water for the first time! She loved it!

We also enjoyed the heated pool with beach entry with our kids and granddaughter! She really liked that! We had a few passing afternoon rain showers, so that cooled things down.
That evening, we enjoyed dinner as a family at Maverick’s Grill. It was delicious and a neat place with a great staff. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was a wonderful way to end our time with our daughter, son in law, and granddaughter. They will be making their way back home while we continue our journey West. We packed up our RV that evening and prepared for our journey towards Glacier National Park.

Things you see in Glacier National Park. Triple Arches and a Red Bus along Going to the Sun Road.

The Triple Arches bridge in Glacier National Park was constructed in 1927. It was designed as an alternative to a large retaining wall along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The bridge is a 65-foot long, three-span structure made of reinforced concrete. It was built to traverse deep rifts in the mountainside where the road crosses the continental divide.

Glacier National Park’s iconic red buses, nicknamed “Red Jammers,” have a rich history dating back to the 1930s. These vintage buses, manufactured by the White Motor Company, are known for their distinctive red color and open-top design, offering unique sightseeing opportunities. They were the first authorized motor transportation utility in any National Park.

Day 3 - July 4 - Granby, CO

We woke up in Granby, Colorado at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain! This resort is one of a kind. Families and kids everywhere making memories together! Heated pool, activity lake, bowling alley, game room, pickleball, dog parks, trails for biking, restaurant, bars, putting greens. The list goes on and on and on!

It was a cloudy day with scattered thunderstorms. Our plan was to use our timed entry to Rocky Mountain National Park at 11 AM to go hiking, but the weather was too rainy. We headed to the visitor center and then decided to take the scenic Trail Ridge Road to explore by truck. We stopped at Farview Curve Overlook and took in the breathtaking views! Amazing! We continued on to Lake Irene where we found a picnic table with a view and had our packed lunch. There was a break in the rain, so we decided to do Lake Irene Trail, which was a short 0.8 mile hike with pretty views. A great hike for our 16 month old grand daughter and our pregnant daughter!

For the remainder of the day, we played co****le, 42 dominoes, and feasted on a delicious steak dinner cooked by chef Bryan!

Day 2 - Raton, NM to Granby Colorado

We woke up early in Raton, NM and rolled out at 8 am heading for Granby, Colorado. It was a wonderful drive heading into the mountains. We stopped for fuel and DEF in Monument, CO and had lunch in the coach. We checked our route and noticed an hour delay on I-70. We checked alternative routes and most of them added 1-2 hours to our trip. Our kids were in their camper 30 minutes ahead of us. We headed out and hit traffic around 1:30 PM.

For an hour or so it would creep forward now and then, but then by 2 PM, it was stopped completely. We had Starlink in-motion setup with the dish mounted on the roof, so we began to search for information online. It was then that we learned the interstate had just been shut down both directions in the mountains and there was no way to get out with our setup over 65 feet long.

As time went on, more and more people began exiting their vehicles and walking miles up the hill to try to see what was going on. Little to no cell service made information unavailable! People began urinating on the side of the road in full view of everyone else in desperation. It was also hot, about 90 degrees outside. We felt very lucky to be in our motorhome.

A trucker told us we would be forced to exit and turn back to Denver, which meant our route to Granby would be via a drive through the highest paved road in the US and straight through Rocky Mtn National Park. No way we would take that drive in the dark! We were getting worried about what our plan would be. It was July 3rd and I’m sure all RV parks nearby were fully booked.

At about 4 hours of waiting, cars began driving on the shoulder to exit, and we began to creep up toward that exit, but in the center lane. As we got closer, we realized we would have had to have been on the shoulder to exit and there were people sitting in 18 wheeler trucks at the closure point past the exit. We realized quickly we would be stopped until the interstate reopened, which was predicted to be 8-9 pm. At this point, our kids were ahead of us enough that they could take Highway 40 to Granby, which was not our plan due to the steep grades and switchbacks. They made it to the campground safely.

All of a sudden, the traffic ahead of us began to move. They opened up our section of I-70! We decided to also take highway 40 because we didn’t know if the Eisenhower Tunnel was open yet. Bryan kept the speed at 35 using the engine break and manual shifting to minimize using and burning up our air brakes. The system on the coach is way different than the true engine brake in the F-450, but he successfully and safely got us over the Berthoud Pass, which is 11,306 feet. After the stress of the day, this drive was the icing on the cake.

We arrived at Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain safe and sound that evening, and were so ready to relax and enjoy the cooler weather! Our site is amazing and this park is one of the best family parks we have ever stayed in. We definitely recommend it!

Day 1 one of our summer trip was an interesting day for us. We traveled from Fort Worth, TX to Raton, NM. 572 miles.

We found that the Jeep with the lift and 3 bike rack was a bit squatted. We’ve never had an issue with sway before, but found that over 65 mph, it would begin to sway slightly, especially on bumpy roads. The rack with bikes is just over 200 lbs. To solve this problem, we maxed out our speed at 60 mph. This prevented any sway. We are going to need to look into this issue more.

The second issue we had was with our Patriot brake inside the Jeep. We kept getting random beeps on the display with nothing showing up on the display indicating what the beep was for. Other times, we had beeps and a “reset brake” alert. Then another two times it indicated power was lost. Each time we had alarms, we found the safest place we could to pull over and checked the brake, took it out, and reset it. We must have stopped 5-6 times for this issue. We plan to switch to a different braking system after this trip. Recommendations appreciated.

On the last Patriot brake stop, we were pulled over with the wind coming from the back. When I opened the door to step out, it flew out of my hand and broke the door strut. 😢

We arrived safely and stayed at the KOA Raton. It was a suitable stopover on our way to Colorado. Our site was nice and long, so no need to unhook our Jeep. Overall it was a nice first day back on the road. No major issues and it was an overcast day, so the inside of the bus stayed at about 72 degrees using the generator and running all 3 air conditioners. We went through a few thunderstorms for the first time and Bryan drove like a champ!

Follow along on our 25 day, 5000 mile journey!
