Hamtramck to Gain 1,000 New Trees by 2028
———————————————
Nearly 200 trees will be planted across Hamtramck thanks to local residents and Grow Hamtramck, a grant initiative to plant 1,000 trees in the City over the next 4 years. Formerly known as the Hamtramck Urban Forest Program, Grow Hamtramck works to plan for the future of the city’s trees and to increase its tree canopy.
Residents can help Grow Hamtramck achieve its goal, funded by the U.S. Forest Service, by requesting a tree for their neighborhood.
With 200–300 tree plantings projected for this year and another 300 planned for spring 2026, Grow Hamtramck is well on its way to achieving its 1,000-tree target by 2028.
“Hamtramck residents are stepping up and showing that they want more trees on their blocks,” said Max Gilginas, community involvement coordinator for the city of Hamtramck. “And we're working hard to make that happen.”
The addition of trees to Hamtramck’s neighborhoods will help cool sidewalks, streets, and yards, a benefit during hot summers. Trees also slow and intercept rainfall, which helps prevent flooding. In addition, they calm traffic, making streets safer and neighborhoods more livable.
Grow Detroit’s list of available trees are those that are best suited for Hamtramck. This will prevent trees from lifting sidewalks and becoming tangled in power lines, and will also address safety concerns.
“This project is about more than just trees,” said Isabel Allaway, community & economic development director and project lead for Grow Hamtramck. “It’s about building a healthier, more vibrant city. One tree, one block, and one neighbor at a time.”
The Grow Hamtramck team plans to place nursery orders in early September, and planting will begin in October. Detroit-based contractor, Premier Group Associates will manage tree planting, inspecting and watering.
Residents have until Aug. 15 to request a tree. To make a request, send an email to [email protected] or complete the Resident Tree Request Form.
