Join us in Seattle for an evening with author Patricia Martin Holt.

Patricia Martin Holt, a Georgia Author of the Year finalist and winner of Chanticleer’s International First Prize for Non-Fiction, is the author of Empower a Refugee: Peace of Thread and the Backyard Humanity Movement. This book continues the story she began in Committee of One: Making a Difference One Life at a Time, which chronicles her work in Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan.

After relocating to Atlanta, Patricia sought to reconnect with Middle Eastern refugees and met Denise Smith, founder of Peace of Thread. This inspiring grassroots initiative empowers refugee women by teaching them to create and sell handcrafted items, offering them income, purpose, and pride. Smith’s nonprofit shows that you needn’t travel abroad to make a difference. You can make it right here in your own community.

On Wednesday August 20, 2025, Patricia will share the moving stories of these women and the impact of Peace of Thread in her presentation in the context of current events.

Join us for a discussion of activism and empowerment for refugees in the US with Patricia Martin Holt, author of Empower a Refugee.

"I’ve said for years our greatest enemy in society is the lack of trust. We get to lack of trust through lack of communication and lack of understanding. If we flip all those elements into the positive, the formula is simple: Communication + Understanding = Trust"

Sand Paper Stone tells the captivating story of a British man from Liverpool, now living in London, whose life seems outwardly secure. With a steady job and a close-knit circle of friends from diverse backgrounds, his life is stable but incomplete. As a Muslim convert, the approach of a landmark moment in his life ignites an inner calling: the pilgrimage to Mecca.

What begins as a deeply personal quest soon turns into an extraordinary adventure. From navigating obstacles at the consulate in London to facing unexpected challenges upon arrival in Jeddah, his journey is anything but straightforward. Taken in as a "wayfarer" by a warm and welcoming extended family, he embarks on a transformative experience. They guide him through the rituals of the pilgrimage and stand by him as he marvels at the awe-inspiring moments they share at Islam's holiest shrine.

Just as he begins to feel the profound spiritual fulfillment he has long sought, the serenity of his pilgrimage is disrupted by a clash with the realities of bureaucracy. Pulled into a labyrinth of petty officialdom, he faces baffling meetings with detached government ministers, sluggish administrators, and mounting frustration. When his journey takes an unexpected and dramatic turn, he finds himself running alone through a deserted airport terminal and onto a runway, searching desperately for a plane to Geneva.

Sand Paper Stone is a powerful exploration of faith, identity, and the collision of spiritual aspiration with worldly complexities. A deeply human story, it offers an unforgettable glimpse into one man’s search for meaning amidst chaos and connection in the most sacred of journeys.
