Skill for Living

1 Corinthians 2:6
"However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing."

In the Old Testament, what did weavers of priestly garments, the builders of the tabernacle, a person regarded as shrewd, a diviner who could cast spells, tiny insects, a craftsman who built idols, and the pilots of ships have in common? They were all said to have hakmah, the Hebrew word for skill. This same Hebrew word is translated wisdom in the Old Testament. In other words, wisdom is the skill for living that comes from God.

Wisdom is also the theme of 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 where Paul contrasts God's wisdom with worldly wisdom. If we look around in our world, we see a definite lack of the skill of living. People are trying to figure out how to live successfully apart from relying on God's wisdom. Everyone needs wisdom, and James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom when we lack the skills to navigate life's challenges.

If you lack the skill to solve a challenge you are facing, seek out God's wisdom in His Word and through prayer.

Comforting Thoughts

2 Corinthians 1:3
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort."

The nineteenth century Irish pastor Phillip Bennett Power had a tender way of comforting those who were suffering from pain or the various trials of life. He suggested three axioms for strength and perseverance in difficult times: "1. Get firmly convinced that God, God Himself, God the Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our Father, is a God of comfort. 2. Do not look anywhere else for your prime and first comfort. I do not deny that there is much comfort in friends, in happy feelings, in books...but I want you to gather in your thoughts and feel that the only sure comfort is with God. 3. Expect comfort from God."

Paul considered suffering for Christ a privilege and kept serving and obeying God in spite of persecution and difficulties. He persevered. The same God who helped Paul persevere through tough times will help you. Ask Him to give you the strength to keep going in any area of life in which you feel weariness and pain.

Rescue the Perishing

Galatians 1:3-4
"The Lord Jesus Christ...gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age."

Dalton Grose of Waterville, Minnesota was sitting in his boat one day when he saw a truck fly into the lake and sink in the water. Grose jumped into the lake, reached the vehicle, positioned his legs against the side of the truck, and, with adrenaline-fueled strength, managed to open the door and pull out the elderly driver. The two sank to the bottom of the lake, but Grose pushed off and managed to get the man's face above water and swim with him to the dock where another by stander helped pull both men to safety. Grose was awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism because he risked his life to save another.

Jesus came to seek and save the lost. He jumped into this world to pull us to safety. He rescued us, and He also commissioned us to help with the effort.

We may not see a vehicle sink into a lake, but every day we're surrounded by sinking swimmers. Let's be aware of it. Let's do our part to rescue the perishing.

Blanket Coverage

Genesis 50:20
"But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is to this day, to save many people alive."

In short, insurance in all its forms is protection against the possibility of loss or damage. It involves the transfer of risk from one party to another based on compensation from the insured to the insurer. For thousands of years, various forms of insurance have been used-an acknowledgement of the human desire to avoid the impact of negative events in life. Insurance can be taken out for a limited time or for a lifetime.

With this new year, it is natural to wonder what events will transpire. The Bible says we have an insurance policy of sorts with God that says, regardless of what happens, it will result in a good outcome in our life. That is the message of Romans 8:28: All things in the new year and every year will work together for the good of those who belong to God's family. No insurance company offers a policy with that kind of blanket coverage.

If you belong to God through faith in Christ, you are insured. Regardless of what the new year brings, it will be for your good.

Truth Be Known

Genesis 3:13
"The serpent deceived me."

Some drivers in Kansas received text messages last fall telling them they had not paid a Kansas Turnpike toll. The official logo of the Kansas Turnpike Authority was included on the text, and the message said it was a final reminder regarding an unpaid toll. But it was all a scam, a deception.

The devil has been a deceiver from the very beginning. And he has more ways of deceiving us now than ever. Everyday thousands of scammers contact people by text, email, phone, or letter. During the Tribulation, the deception will be even greater. The False Prophet will deceive those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do (Revelation 13:14).

One of the best ways to defend ourselves against deception involves daily Bible study. God's Word is truth (John 17:17), and the more truth we pack into our minds the less vulnerable we'll be to Satan's schemes. Wisdom comes from the pages of Scripture. We all need to diligently protect ourselves from deception but remember-one of the best ways is spending time each day in God's Truth.

The Centerpiece

John 19:17-18
"He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called...Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center."

Noah Webster came to faith in Christ during the Second Great Awaking, and his 1828 dictionary often used biblical examples to define words. Under the word center, Webster included this definition: to fix on a central point. And he illustrated it with this sentence: Thy joys are centered all in me alone.

If you still have a Christmas centerpiece on your table, let it remind you that Jesus was crucified in the center of the victims. But also remember Revelation 5:6: He is now standing at the center of the throne.

Wherever Jesus is, He is central. He is in the center. Sadly, some Christians have included Jesus in the panorama of their lives, but He doesn't occupy the central spot. Is that true for you? Yield everything to His authority today and let Him be the Lord of all there is of you. Let Him be the centerpiece of your life. All your joys are centered in Him alone!

Thirst Aid Station

John 4:6
"Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well."

Jacob's well is still in the same place it was two thousand years ago when Jesus stopped for a drink. Visitors can still drink water pulled up in a bucket from its depths. Many tour groups in the Holy Land can't go there because of political difficulties, but those who do find the ancient well surrounded by a lovely Greek Orthodox church.

In John 4:6, we're told that Jesus was weary. He sat down at the well and feeling dehydrated asked for a drink. He wanted the Samaritan woman to draw some water for His thirst. In return, He gave her something for her spiritual thirst - His own living water!

When our Lord entered the world at Bethlehem, He came as a human who was subject to fatigue, thirst, hunger, and pain. He accepted His humanity because through it He was able to meet our needs and satisfy our spiritual thirst forever.

You may never be able to visit Jacob's Well in Samaria, but you're welcome to drink from the living water of eternal life that Jesus gives!

The Lord's Lineage

Luke 1:32
"He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David."

In 2 Samuel 7:8-16, Almighty God promised an everlasting legacy to the dynasty of King David saying, "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever". This is similar to the covenant God made with Abraham that through his seed all the world would be blessed (Genesis 22:18).

The opening verse of the New Testament says, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1). The story of the Old Testament isn't simply the story of the Jewish nation; it's the story of one family - one ribbon of lineages -that leads to the Messiah!

Jesus is the rightful heir of the kingship of Israel who comes through the lineage of David. He is the ultimate fulfillment of the covenant God made with David, a descendant of Abraham.

God keeps His promises, even over hundreds and thousands of years, He will keep all His promises to you too!

Seeking and Finding

Luke19:10
"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

Nick Carter was born in Kentucky in 1900 and became famous for his ability to find lost people - more than 650 lost or escaped individuals. Though an American, Nick Carter was also known by his French name, le chien de Saint-Hubert - now referred to in America as a bloodhound. Nick Carter was not a detective or private investigator; he was a member of the most famous seeking dog breeds in the world.

Bloodhounds seek by instinct, the result of centuries of breeding. Once they catch the scent of their lost quarry, they have only one goal: to seek and find that which is lost. Those words remind us of Jesus' stated mission to seek and to save that which was lost. Beginning in the Garden of Eden, when God sought Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8-9), God has sought those He created to restore fellowship with them. It is a good thing God seeks us, for Scripture says, "There is none who seeks after God" (Romas 3:11).

If you know God today, it is because God sought you, found you, and saved you. Thank Him today for His relentless pursuit of you.

Christmas Tree

John 11:25-26
"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?'"

It seems the modern version of an evergreen Christmas tree can be traced back to Germany in the sixteenth century. When Germany's Prince Albert married England's Queen Victoria in 1840, the tradition of an evergreen Christmas tree made its way to England. A magazine article and picture of Prince Albert and Victoria's Christmas tree was widely publicized in America where the tradition was embraced. Regardless of the exact lineage of the Christmas tree, one tradition remains certain: Evergreen trees symbolize eternal life.

Imagine an oak sapling as a Christmas tree with its dying leaves falling off and littering the floor. Somehow that image doesn't fit the promise of eternal life. Yes, evergreen trees die eventually, but maintaining their shape and color during the Christmas season reminds us of the life promised to us through the birth of Jesus.

Even if you decorate an artificial evergreen tree this year, remember the never-ending life you have been gifted through Christ.

The First Gospel

Genesis 3:15
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."

Theologians and Bible interpreters have long referred to Genesis 3:15 as the protoevangelium - Latin for first Gospel. The famous English preacher Charles Simeon called Genesis 3:15 the sum and summary of the whole Bible. Why? Because it contains the Good News that Christ, the Seed of the woman, will defeat God's enemy, Satan.

The entire Bible is the story of Christ, who would come into the world to pay the price for the sin of Adam and all mankind - to redeem all who would put their trust in Him. When the Jews challenged Jesus and His teachings, He told them, "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me" (John 5:39). Over and over, the early Christian leaders testified that the Old Testament foretold of the coming of Christ (Acts 3:18, 21, 24; 7:52, 10:43, 28:23).

From ages past, God put in place a plan to forgive and save you. Thank Him today for His Savior and the Book that reveals His plan.
