I met Spencer Hutchinson in 2021 while I was working on a cassette production project titled Arcane Object. AO collaborated with Chicago sound artists to produce cassette releases that included an art booklet in a custom designed box. The artists would use tape recorders in their production to create original work to be released on cassette.
Spencer was referred to me by AO artist Jon Monteverde as a possible collaborator for Arcane Object. I connected with Spencer and he was very interested in releasing work on cassette. I came to learn that his interest was to release some of his existing audio compared to creating original work using tape for Arcane Object. This was the beginning of our collaborations that would involve Choice and Compromise.
I went on to producing two cassette releases for Spencer under his moniker ersatz modem and plans were in the works for a third. The first release was beat driven electronic music titled Raw Acid Tape. The second was Light, Air, Craft vol. 2 (I'm not aware of a vol. 1) a compilation of ambient electronic music.
Both ersatz modem cassettes will be on play and available for purchase at the exhibition THIRTEEN + THIRTEEN, the collaborative work of Spencer Hutchinson and Alex Wilson, opening this Sat, 9/14, 6-10pm at Agitator Gallery at 3851 W Fullerton Ave Chicago IL. There will also be a number of Arcane Object releases on display and available for purchase.
