Recent rains have brought some relief across Utah, letting us take a step back to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions starting August 28.

But don’t get too comfortable. Fuels can dry fast, and we still need everyone’s help to keep communities and landscapes safe. Here’s what Stage 1 means on BLM-Utah managed lands:

🔥 Campfires with wood or charcoal are only allowed in permanent cement or metal fire rings at developed campgrounds and picnic areas.
✅ Propane and liquid-fuel stoves or grills are good to go anywhere as long as there's no flammable vegetation within 3-feet of them.
🚫 Explosives (including exploding targets) are banned.
🎇 Fireworks and pyrotechnics are always prohibited on BLM lands.
🚬 Smoking is limited to enclosed vehicles, developed areas, or clearings three feet across with no burnable vegetation.

Motorized closures around San Francisco Peaks, Marshall Lake & Pumphouse Wash are lifted.

Propane devices (on/off) can be used in cleared areas.

Smoking only in vehicles, buildings, or developed recreation sites.

Fireworks are always prohibited.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions go into effect on August 8 for the entire San Juan National Forest. This means NO CAMPFIRES anywhere. There are additional restrictions for smoking, welding, and explosives. Additional details will be released once the Forest Order is signed on Thursday. Fire danger is extreme across Southwest Colorado, with no significant monsoon relief in sight. For the safety of our communities and visitors, we must do everything we can to prevent wildfires.
