Chelsea legend's son and Enzo Maresca's 'perfect debutant' named in new scholarship class
The Blues’ storied Cobham academy has named its next set of prospects

Reggie Walsh and Thiago Silva’s son, Isago, are among the 16 Chelsea academy players to have signed as scholars ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Walsh, 16, signed for Chelsea as an under-eight, and is the only player in this intake to have appeared for the first team after he featured in the Conference League last season.

A versatile midfielder, he debuted off the bench in the semi-final first leg against Djurgarden, launching a threatening long-range strike with his first touch of the evening, before completing 90 minutes in the reverse fixture. In doing so, he became the youngest Englishman ever to start in a European match.
Enzo Maresca lauded his contributions, saying Walsh was perfect for his system.

It’s a great moment, he’s very young,” the Italian enthused. “He’s very young but in the way we want to play, in our way, in our style, he’s perfect

But he’s still very young, he needs to learn, he needs to work hard, and he needs to grow for sure. But we are happy.”
His development will continue this season in Chelsea’s academy as he trains under accomplished U18 coach Hassan Sulaiman. He will be joined by a new assistant in former Southampton U21 boss Calum McFarlane.

Joining Walsh in the 2025/26 scholar class is legendary centre-back Thiago Silva’s son, Isago. He joined the club at U13 level after his father signed to the first team from Paris Saint-Germain, and has made his name as a capable defender, able to play at either left-back or centre-back. His brother Iago also plays in Chelsea’s academy.
Silva, 16, has appeared at U18 level, debuting in a comfortable 3-1 win over Leicester in February. Also featuring in that tie was goalkeeper Freddy Bernal, a regular in England youth setups who has also signed on to a scholarship. The 16-year-old is highly regarded at Chelsea, who in May rebuffed a £1.25m offer from Arsenal for his services.

Ibrahim Rabbaj moved across London from Crystal Palace at U12 level and has gone on to feature in Morocco’s youth ranks, hoisting the U17 Africa Cup of Nations this summer after downing Mali by way of a nervy penalty shootout in the final.

Perhaps the fastest rising player in this class is Ryan Kavuma-McQueen. The 16-year-old is punching far above his weight, already scoring against both Manchester United and Ipswich Town for the Blues’ U21 side and representing England at youth level. His performances raised eyebrows last year after he scored a hat-trick for the Three Lions U15s in a 5-1 win over Morocco.
All those named will be eligible to sign professional deals when they turn 17.

Two in, two out? Expert claims Bayern want Chelsea duo as current stars up for sale

Chelsea duo Malo Gusto and Renato Veiga are reportedly both on the list of Bayern Munich this summer, according to transfer expert Christian Falk.

The Blues pair probably wouldn’t come cheap, though, so sales might be required first, with Bayern looking to offload Sacha Boey and Kim Min-jae, according to Falk in his latest column for CF Bayern Insider.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea would realistically let Gusto leave, though if Reece James manages to stay fit then he’d probably be the first choice for Enzo Maresca’s side in the right-back spot.

Veiga, meanwhile, is surely likely to leave Stamford Bridge after barely featuring since joining last summer, having been quickly loaned out to Juventus.

Christian Falk on Bayern’s interest in Chelsea duo

Discussing Bayern’s interest in Gusto and Veiga, Falk said: “Bayern Munich are primarily focused on bolstering the offence this summer – they really want to do that. If they can manage to sell players, pursuing the Chelsea duo becomes more possible.

“They like Malo Gusto and, yes, they have an eye on Renato Veiga. However, in both cases, they have to sell players first. So, with Malo Gusto, he’s playing at right-back, and FC Bayern don’t want to sell Konrad Laimer. They don’t want to sell Josip Stanisic either, but they do want to part ways with Sacha Boey.

“So, if they could sell this player, there could be an option for Gusto. Renato Veiga would also be of interest if they can sell Kim Min-jae. So, you see, if there is movement on either position in the selling list, there could be options for new players.”

Chelsea to sell players this summer

Chelsea have invested a lot of money on new signings in recent years, with a lot of them not really working out.

That likely means that some of those players will now be available, with Veiga making sense as someone whose departure would suit all parties involved.

The Evening Standard have reported on others looking set to leave CFC, such as Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Armando Broja.

The problem with Chelsea’s transfer masterplan

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are riding a high from winning the Club World Cup, but a surplus of players leaves a problem to solve before the end of the transfer window, writes Richard Jolly

It could be deemed the most successful transfer policy in the global game. Cole Palmer, the flagship coup of Chelsea’s recruitment in the new era, scored twice in the Club World Cup final and was named player of the tournament.

The other goal in the demolition of Paris Saint-Germain went to Joao Pedro: 11 days into his Chelsea career, the Brazilian had already scored twice in the semi-final. The Golden Glove was awarded to the much-maligned Robert Sanchez, the unlikely scourge of PSG’s feared forward line. Of 15 players used in the final, three were academy graduates and the other 12 all bought under the new regime.

Now Chelsea have a rare lull in the football, they can get back to their actual business: transfer business. After proof of the mastery of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, they have another chance to demonstrate it. Or, putting sarcasm aside, after the evidence that Chelsea’s outlay on players – now around £1.4bn under their current owners – has brought some quality and some return on the pitch, the Club World Cup winners have more trading to do.

This time, the revolving door needs more departures than arrivals. Part of it is a rather basic but still accurate element: Chelsea have far too many players. Another ought to be obvious: the savings Chelsea claim they make with lower basic wages is offset by the size of the squad and it is a waste of money to pay players not to play.

Yet there is now another imperative. Chelsea were fined €20m by Uefa for breaching squad cost control, which could rise by up to another €60m. Unless they demonstrate they have generated a cost-saving through sales, they could be unable to register new signings for the Champions League. Some of those new faces debuted for Chelsea in the United States, in Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Dario Essugo. Others played for other clubs there but are now Blues, in Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian. Then there is Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez, while Geovany Quenda is due to arrive next year

The good news, from a Chelsea perspective, is that they have so many players that there are a host of possible ways to generate money. Indeed, they have already started. They have reduced their stockpile of goalkeepers by selling Djordje Petrovic to Bournemouth, Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal and Marcus Bettinelli to Manchester City. Bashir Humphreys’ loan to Burnley became permanent and, in the accounts, counts as pure profit. Mathis Amougou has gone to sister club Strasbourg; there are suggestions Ishe Samuels-Smith will follow suit.

The bad news, from a Chelsea perspective, is that it would still seem to leave a significant shortfall. Even Noni Madueke’s move to Arsenal, while for a far bigger fee, would leave them with a substantial net spend this window.

Another problem is the probability that the players they most want to sell are among the hardest to offload, particularly for sizeable sums. The Stamford Bridge version of the bomb squad would seem to include Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Joao Felix and Axel Disasi, none of whom went to the Club World Cup and thus, presumably, have fewer medals from it than Donald Trump. Perhaps Christopher Nkunku, though he did come on in the final, and Armando Broja may be honorary members of it.

There is the further complication that they include several of the bigger earners. The great unsellable could be Sterling, whose loan to Arsenal last season was both subsidised and unsuccessful, thus rendering it less likely anyone will buy him now. Chilwell went to Crystal Palace, but they have just bought a left-back, Borna Sosa, on presumably smaller wages. Disasi could now be approximately an eighth-choice centre-back. Joao Felix was an oddity, bought a year after an underwhelming loan but only to pocket the pure profit from Conor Gallagher’s departure. Perhaps Benfica will prove an escape route, but probably at a loss for Chelsea

Then there is Nkunku; available for a while, offered to various other clubs, a player of pedigree, but whose route into Enzo Maresca’s strongest side is blocked. Chelsea have tried to sell Broja before but have overpriced an injury-prone attacker.

There is a further category: the young players bought by the new regime, but without a clear plan or path to the team. Chelsea could do with cashing in on some. Carney Chukwuemeka could be among the most sellable and Chelsea’s battalion of new midfielders might render him surplus to requirements. So, too, Lesley Ugochukwu. Maybe even Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, too.

The new influx of strikers makes it still harder to see David Datro Fofana or Deivid Washington, currently on loan at Santos, in the team; indeed, Nicolas Jackson’s descent from first-choice centre-forward means he offers the possibility of proving a money-making sale.

Others can testify to Chelsea’s ruthlessness. Trevoh Chalobah has long looked at risk, as an academy graduate, but ought to have proved his (footballing) value enough to be safe; younger homegrown players such as Tyrique George or Josh Acheampong should nevertheless consider themselves warned.

The sheer volume of footballers means Chelsea have multiple options. Perhaps few would notice if, say, Omari Kellyman or Caleb Wiley or Marc Guiu or Gabriel Slonina went. Renato Veiga at least made more of an impact.

Perhaps the size of the squad explains why Chelsea need so many sporting directors. They could all be busy looking to offload players. Indeed, they have shown creativity in finding homes for the unwanted. But temporary deals could be less suitable if they need to make a profit. And, in any case, they can only loan out six players abroad, apart from club-trained and Under-21 players. Which, as some of their youthful recruits are 21 or 22, becomes more of an issue, especially if some of those loan spots have to be saved for a couple of the senior players who have no buyers.

If part of the rationale behind Chelsea’s remarkable recruitment was that they were creating value, now they need to extract some of it, to turn the hypothetical prices of players on the balance sheet into funds. Call it an exodus or a clearout but there has long been a case that Chelsea had to shed players. Now, in the glow of success, after being anointed by Fifa and punished by Uefa, is the time to do it.

Pat Nevin says Chelsea player and Lionel Messi have one thing in common, ‘you will realise’

Cole Palmer’s global status may have leaped even further by his heroics for Chelsea this summer.

As Chelsea won the Club World Cup tournament in the United States, Cole Palmer was yet again the talisman for his team. In particular, the English playmaker scored two goals and created an assist in the 3-0 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

The 23-year-old Blues star deservedly won the Golden Ball prize, which is awarded to the tournament’s best player.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez hailed Palmer as the world’s best after yet another top-class performance in a cup final. It was a magical way for him to sign off from a long and memorable 2024/25 campaign.

Season Appearnaces Goals Assists Trophies
2024/25 52 18 14 2
2023/24 45 25 15 0

Pat Nevin spots what Cole Palmer and Lionel Messi have in common

According to Pat Nevin, Chelsea’s Palmer falls in the world-class bracket because of the intelligence in his overall game, rather than relying on pace.

He points out that’s one thing he has in common with football icon Lionel Messi, 38, who’s still playing now in Inter Miami colours.

Nevin said in the BBC Football Extra newsletter (14 July): “Just look at the game now and you will realise that although you generally have to be fast, slow players rarely survive now, excessive speed still doesn’t outdo skill, intelligence and game awareness. Cole Palmer is quite fast, but that absolutely is not why he is a world-class player. Lionel Messi is very fast with the ball at his feet, but pace never defined him, it was ability.”

Of course, Palmer will have one of the best football careers ever if he can achieve even half of what Messi has done. It’s not really fair to compare any player to the Argentine superstar.

However, we understand the sentiment that Palmer is just a true footballer. On his day, the Chelsea attacking midfielder can stack up against any of the current stars across the globe, proving that in a stellar first two years in West London.

Liam Delap called Palmer one of the world’s top stars even before he joined Chelsea to become his teammate.

Meanwhile, Joe Cole compared Palmer to Messi midway through last season because of the pace he plays the game at.

Cole Palmer could approach Eden Hazard greatness

If you’re looking for the most technically gifted footballer to play for Chelsea in the 21st century, Eden Hazard should be the most popular answer.

The retired 34-year-old winger lit up Stamford Bridge during a seven-year spell for the Blues between 2012 and 2019, winning six trophies during that time. He was the type of individual talent that stood out on a football pitch.

The comparison between Hazard and Palmer across their respective first two years at Chelsea makes for very interesting reading.

Of course, Hazard’s game was far more than just numbers, something that Chelsea fans who watched him every week will testify to. But people may start to realise that Palmer is a modern great doing some equally impressive stuff for the Blues.

Palmer has followed in Hazard’s footsteps by taking the No.10 shirt, so let’s see what legacy he leaves at the club by the time he finishes.

Jose Mourinho has just proven exactly why Chelsea decided not to sign ‘fantastic’ player this summer

Chelsea have been very selective over the players they have signed this summer, and their decision to not bring in one transfer target has instantly been proven right.

Despite being happy to spend big money on Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens already during this transfer window, there have been deals they have walked away from due to it not being on their terms.

This occurred with goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who many expected to move to Stamford Bridge before the Club World Cup got underway.

However, Chelsea walked away from Maignan before the tournament got underway, and reaped the rewards as Robert Sanchez claimed the Golden Glove award.

Jose Mourinho proves Chelsea right over Jhon Duran

Another player the Blues were linked with was Jhon Duran, after he made it clear he wanted to leave Saudi Arabia after spending just one season there.

Chelsea had previous interest in the striker, however said no to signing Duran this summer, instead looking towards the likes of Liam Delap and Pedro to transform their attack.

It has been reported that off-field problems were behind the Blues not making the move, and he went on to link up with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbache.

Things have not got off to the best start though, and according to Marca, Duran did not turn up for training on his first day, angering the former Chelsea boss in the process.

Mourinho is already going to take winning over by his new signing, however has given Chelsea instant clarity that they made the right call not looking to bring him in this summer.

Chelsea considering another new striker this summer

Despite already transforming their attack ahead of the 2025/26 season, reports have claimed Chelsea might not be done yet.

The Blues are expected to enter the market again if they part ways with Nicolas Jackson, whose future is very unclear at this moment.

Jackson didn’t feature at all in the Club World Cup final, and he has immense competition for his place after two years of smooth sailing.

A number of big clubs are interested in signing the Senegal striker already, and is a situation that is expected to play out in the coming weeks

Frank Lampard was right all along about Chelsea defender in 2023, he’s silenced any critics now

Trevoh Chalobah has gone through more ups and downs than most players in the Chelsea squad.

There have been times when it’s looked like Trevoh Chalobah, 26, wouldn’t make it at Chelsea.

The defender is popular with supporters after coming through the Blues academy, but he was loaned out to Crystal Palace at the start of last season. However, in a remarkable turnaround, he was recalled by Chelsea in January, going on and becoming a key figure in Enzo Maresca’s side during the second half of the campaign.

Chalobah’s crowning moment was helping Chelsea clinch the 2025 Club World Cup this summer, thrashing Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final.

It’s obvious that Chalobah has had plenty of critics and obstacles in his career to date, but it now looks like he’s at the peak of his powers and comfortable at Stamford Bridge.

Joe Cole said loaning out Chalobah was a “crime” by Chelsea a year ago. Thankfully, everything has now come together for the talented central defender.

Frank Lampard was spot on about Trevoh Chalobah in 2023

Chalobah has played under several different Chelsea managers, including club legend Frank Lampard when he was the Blues’ interim boss at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Back in May 2023, Lampard insisted Chalobah will keep improving. He said: ” was looking forward to working with Trev, because I didn’t get that chance when I was here before. In my short period here, you look at the individual performances and I’ve been very happy… He’s going to get a lot better.”

It turns out that Lampard was spot on because Chalobah has gone from strength to strength in the past couple of years.

The England international has proven he can shine on some of the biggest stages, forming a great partnership next to Levi Colwill in Chelsea’s backline. On paper, he’s got all the tools of a top centre-half with his physical and technical attributes.

It was all doom and gloom when Chalobah was left off Chelsea’s pre-season tour a year ago. The way he’s battled and silenced any critics has been admirable, though.

Chelsea changed their mind on Trevoh Chalobah

It’s been reported that Chelsea are not encouraging bids for Chalobah this summer because they’ve performed a U-turn and want to keep the academy graduate.

If the Blues were to offload the centre-back, we suspect there would be huge outrage from the club’s fanbase.

He’s earned his spot in Maresca’s squad the hard way!

On a side note, it’s so rewarding to see Cobham talents such as Chalobah, Colwill, and Reece James all shining in the current first-team squad.

Chelsea now making £80m “outstanding” Premier League star their top transfer target

Chelsea are reportedly set to make Aston Villa attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers their top transfer target for the rest of the summer.

The Blues have already made a strong start to the window by bringing in Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens, but it seems they’re not done yet

We’ve seen Chelsea invest a lot in top young talents in recent times, and it looks like Rogers could be next, according to the Sun.

The report states that the England international is valued at around £80m, which looks like it could be a good investment for the present and future.

Morgan Rogers becomes top transfer target for Chelsea

Rogers finished last season with an impressive tally of 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for club and country.

At one point he was even praised as “outstanding” by former Villa man Stillyan Petrov on TNT Sports.

It’s easy to see why Chelsea would be interested in the talented 22-year-old, who could surely be an upgrade on flops and misfits like Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling, as well as the suspended Mykhailo Mudryk.

Rogers has developed well since joining Villa, so he might not want to leave too soon as we’ve often seen players struggle after rushing into a big move.

Still, Chelsea’s commitment to recruiting and developing young players should make them a pretty good destination for him at this stage of his career.

Can Chelsea put together a title-challenging squad?

Chelsea fans have had to be patient, but there are signs that this project finally seems to be coming together.

The west London giants won the Europa Conference League final and the Club World Cup final under Enzo Maresca, while they’re also back in the Champions League for next season.

If CFC add someone like Rogers to their squad as well, they should definitely be considered one of the main teams to watch in next season’s title race.

Manchester United and Chelsea hold meeting with agent for same signing – Player determined to secure summer move

That’s according to Friday’s edition of Sport, and they report the Bundesliga winners have explored the possibility of securing his services. Both Manchester United and Chelsea have held meetings with Simon’s entourage to discuss a potential move.

The newspaper adds the attacking midfielder’s desire is to leave Leipzig in this window. The Premier League duo or Bayern could help him fulfil that, but an exit doesn’t seem to be imminent.

According to Sport, the Netherlands international’s high price is holding back Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

The figure isn’t quoted, but Sport mention it in another report, focusing on the possibility of Simons returning to Barcelona. It’s claimed he’s determined to leave the German club, and his camp are in contact with several European clubs, including the La Liga winners.

Agent Ali Barat doesn’t represent the 22-year-old, but he, along with his brother, had a meeting with Barca sporting director Deco on Thursday.

Hansi Flick has the attacking midfield position covered and Sport adds Simons’ €70m price is unaffordable for Barca. Therefore, they aren’t considering signing him in this window.

Manchester United have signed Matheus Cunha and are working on a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Chelsea also have a wealth of attackers, and it’s unlikely the Premier League duo could consider making an offer for the Dutchman.
