Anas al-Sharif, son of Gaza, a child of Jabaliya, was martyred today by Israel. Anas devoted his life to documenting the genocide that has destroyed his home. Over the course of 673 days of genocide, Anas was unfazed in the face of relentless targeting and attacks, determined to document the truth about the occupation’s genocidal warfare. He was a guardian of not only this truth, but of his colleagues as well. Anas campaigned relentlessly for necessary medical treatment for fellow journalists and media workers who had been wounded. He was known widely among journalists in the Strip for his generosity, as quick to share footage as he was to share food.

His murder is an attempt to permanently silence the reporting still being broadcast from the ground, the voices of truth still documenting the Zionist death campaign against Gaza. It is the murder of the man who had become the enduring face of this courage. The world has Anas al-Sharif to thank for our understanding of the daily atrocities occurring in Gaza. Israel knows this, which is why the bomb that killed Anas targeted a journalist tent outside Shifa Hospital. The attack additionally martyred reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh, videographers Moamen Aliwa and Ibrahim Zaher, operator Mohammed Noufal, and Anas’ nephew Mosaab Sharif. Anas leaves behind his wife, Bayan, and two children, Sham and Salah.

In his final message, prepared in case of his own martyrdom, he asked all of us to continue to raise Gaza’s voice. Glory to the martyr Anas al-Sharif. We leave you with his final message: to not let “I urge you not to let chains silence you or borders hold you back. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our plundered homeland. Do not forget Gaza, and do not forget me in your righteous prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.”
