Hours after I delivered my triplets via C-section, my dad lifted one of my newborns and attempted to pass him to my brother. “You’ve got three. He has none,” he stated. When I reached out to grab my infant back, he str:uck me across the head. I didn’t scr:eam—I just pu:shed the call button next to my hospital bed. That’s the moment the whole truth spilled out: they had been plotting this scheme for months.
“You have three kids. Your brother doesn’t have any. The just thing to do would be to hand one over to him.”
Rachel assumed the anesthesia was still messing with her head.
She was resting in a suite at a private clinic in Chicago, Illinois, completely drained following an em:ergency C-section, just hours after bringing her triplets into the world. Merely a few feet away from her mattress sat the cribs holding the three infants she had anticipated through immense fe@r, endless doctor visits, and countless sleepless nights.
And right there, standing directly before her, her very own father had just talked about one of her children as if he were a commodity to be given away.
However, to comprehend how Richard could utter something so vile, you have to rewind to two evenings prior.
Rachel was 33 years old and had been wed to David for six years. Following several years of struggling to build a family, the pregnancy arrived as an astonishing miracle. That miracle grew even more massive when an ultrasound showed she wasn’t just carrying a single baby.
She was carrying three.
From that moment forward, David essentially acted as her extra hands and feet. He prepared meals, handled the grocery runs, built three cribs in the space they previously utilized as a home office, and went with Rachel to every single prenatal checkup his job permitted.
Her own relatives never displayed that same level of joy.
Her mom, Susan, would phone occasionally. Richard, her dad, had always been the sort of guy who felt entitled to dictate everyone's choices. And Rachel’s younger sibling, Jason, had spent years attempting to conceive with his wife, Megan.
Rachel fully grasped how deeply they were hu:rting.
Therefore, she acted as if she didn't hear specific remarks.
“Some folks just get everything all at once,” Megan muttered one afternoon when Rachel brought up the triplets.
David never let that remark go.
Rachel tried her best to.
As she hit her eighth month of pregnancy, David got a sudden work assignment: he was required to fly to London for a few days to seal a massive corporate contract.
He was reluctant to depart.
“I’ll just cancel the whole thing,” he assured her.
Rachel urged him to go, promising she would be alright. Prior to his departure, she dialed her mother and requested just one favor:
“Please keep your cell phone nearby. If anything goes wrong, David is going to be completely out of the country.”
Susan swore she would.
On the second evening, Rachel awoke with a pa!n so severe it forced her to sit straight up. She waited. A couple of minutes later, another contraction h!t. Then one more.
She dialed her mom.
“Mom, I think the babies are on their way. Could you please come pick me up?”
Susan paused.
“Are you positive you aren’t just overreacting?”
Rachel felt her bl00d turn to ice.
Next, Richard grabbed the receiver.
“If it is a true em:ergency, just dial for an ambulance.”
“Dad, I am all by myself.”
“That is exactly what ambulances are meant for.”
Then the line went dead.
Rachel ultimately ended up dialing 911. While the paramedics loaded her out of the residence, she continuously glanced down the road, desperately wishing to spot her parents’ vehicle.
It never arrived.
A few hours down the line, all three infants were delivered prematurely, yet in stable condition.
Rachel wept the moment she heard each of their initial cries.
David, panicking over in London, somehow managed to swap his tickets and swore he’d return as quickly as humanly possible.
That’s when Rachel made the huge error of believing the delivery would finally bring her family to their senses.
She phoned Susan.
This time around, the entire group was eager to rush to the clinic.
Susan, Richard, Jason, and Megan all showed up as a unit.
And after faking it for a couple of minutes like they were actually there to greet the newborns, Richard dragged a seat right next to Rachel’s bed.
“We need to have a discussion regarding Jason and Megan.”
Rachel glanced over at her brother.
Nobody appeared shocked.
Then her father let those words out:
“You’ve got three. They don't have any. You ought to let them take one to raise.”
Rachel felt completely n@useous.
“My infants are not items to be given away.”
Megan moved toward one of the little beds.
“Just think it over. There’s no way you can offer all three of them adequate attention.”
Ignoring the pa!n from her s:urgery, Rachel pu:shed herself upright.
“Step away from my child.”
Megan complied.
But Richard did not.
Her dad deliberately stepped closer to that exact same crib.
And Rachel still lacked any clue regarding what was about to unfold.

PART 2: “Dad, don’t touch my son.”
Richard stopped beside the bassinet, but he didn’t move away.
Rachel knew that look.
It was the expression her father wore whenever someone challenged his authority.
“You’re being dramatic,” he said. “We’re your family.”
“That’s exactly why you should understand what no means.”
Jason lost his patience.
“Do you know how much we’ve spent on fertility treatments? Do you know how many nights Megan has cried because she can’t be a mother?”
Rachel looked at him.
“I’m sorry. I really am. But my children are not the answer to your pain.”
Megan started crying.
Susan immediately went to comfort her.
No one comforted Rachel.
That was when everything became clear.
The previous night, Rachel had been alone, heavily pregnant with triplets, and in labor.
None of them had been willing to get out of bed.
