Chattanooga Civics A podcast discussing local government in Chattanooga, Tennessee

18/02/2025

The City of Chattanooga - Government is holding elections for mayor and city council, as well as a ballot initiative on allowing out-of-state residents to work for the city. Early voting open until February 27 and election day is March 4.

I have released interviews with as many candidates as I could. You can listen on your favorite podcast app by searching "Chattanooga Civics".

I did not reach out to candidates in uncontested races (Jenny Hill - D2, Cody Harvey - D4, and Raquetta Dotley - D7). Some candidates did not respond to interview requests, and others responded but never confirmed a date. I was able to record interviews with the following candidates:

Skip Burnette - D1
Chip Henderson - D1
Jeff Davis for City Council - D3
Dennis Clark For City Council District 5 - D5
Cory Hall - D5
Jenni Berz - D6
Christian Siler - D6
Anna Golladay - City Council District 8 - D8
Doll Sandridge For District 8 - D8
Kelvin Scott City Council - D8
Ron Elliott for Chattanooga- D9

Chattanooga Civics, which started 4 years ago during the 2021 city elections, has been an incredibly rewarding project for me. Thank you to all my guests and listeners!

Great Article from Helen Sharpe, who has been doing great work educating people about tax incentives like PILOTs and TIFs.

For a deep dive on this subject you can listen to my interview with Helen. Search for Chattanooga Civics #43 wherever you get your podcasts.

It is a big deal that the IDB is having a public hearing on PILOT policies. The city and county have been in the PILOT business since 1985.

The Chattanooga City Council is considering new Short Term Vacation Rental (STVR) regulations at tonight's city council meeting. Under the proposed rules, absentee (non-owner occupied) STVRs will have a density cap of 5% of the given units in a multi-family property and cannot be located within 500ft of one another in a single-family zone. There are a lot of other proposed changes and you can read all about them in the latest edition of the newsletter: https://buttondown.email/ChattanoogaCivics/archive/new-stvr-regulations-new-carta-board-and-more/
