The film follows Kyle-Lee Watson, a promising New York City high school basketball star, as he navigates his relationships with Birdie, a local drug dealer, and Shep, a former basketball star now working as a security guard at Kyle's high school. Kyle faces a dilemma about whether to play for his beloved coach Mike Rollins or for Birdie in a playground basketball tournament.

Kyle's mom, Mailika, starts a relationship with Shep, adding to Kyle's resentment. Birdie, who is Shep's younger brother, threatens and manipulates Kyle and his friends. In the tournament, Kyle's team wins against Birdie's team despite intense pressure and violence. Shep intervenes and helps Kyle's team secure victory. Birdie's henchman, Motaw, attempts to kill Kyle, but Shep saves him, getting shot in the process. Birdie is later killed by Bugaloo, Kyle's best friend, in revenge. Kyle eventually receives a scholarship to Georgetown University.
