In June 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a sweeping operation in Houston, Texas, arresting 1,361 individuals identified as illegal immigrants with criminal charges or convictions. The operation, led by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Houston field office, targeted individuals involved in serious crimes, underscoring the agency’s focus on public safety. However, the enforcement efforts have sparked debate over their scope and impact on local communities.
The June operation resulted in the apprehension of individuals with severe criminal records, including:
Adermis Wilson-Gonzalez, a 56-year-old Cuban national convicted in 2003 for hijacking an airplane from Cuba to Key West, arrested on June 29.
Luis Pablo Vasquez-Estolano, a 29-year-old with convictions for homicide, aggravated robbery, and other offenses.
Jose Meza, a 40-year-old Mexican national convicted of sexual assault against a minor.
Javier Escobar Gonzalez, a 51-year-old Mexican national convicted of sexual indecency with a minor.
Arnulfo Olivares Cervantes, a 47-year-old with convictions for co***ne trafficking, attempted murder, and multiple illegal entries.
These arrests were part of a broader initiative, dubbed “Operation Take Back America,” aimed at removing individuals ICE describes as “dangerous criminal aliens,” including child predators and gang members. Gabriel Martinez, acting Field Office Director for ICE ERO Houston, emphasized the agency’s commitment to community safety, stating, “These enforcement actions protect Southeast Texas by removing threats like child predators and gang members.”
