Last week I received the sad news that Dick Cochran had passed away unexpectedly. I had hoped to get additional details from his family and perhaps share an obituary, but I have not been able to locate one yet.

It still felt right to let our extended racing family here in Central Ohio know. Dick was a multi-season Super Pro champion at Pacemakers and had a way of keeping that green dragster parked in the winner’s circle on a regular basis.

I just heard from Dick’s daughter, and a celebration of life is being planned for sometime in October. As soon as the details are available, I will share them here.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Paula and the entire Cochran family during this difficult time.

Sad news today with the passing of long-time racer and friend of the Central Ohio racing community, James “Speedy” Hughes. Always ready to lend a hand at the track or in life, Speedy’s kindness and presence touched so many of us. He will surely be missed by all.

I’ll never forget getting off the phone with Bill Bader after he offered the use of Summit Motorsports Park’s jet drier for a late-season event with questionable weather. I called Speedy about towing it down, and without hesitation his reply was, “I’m on my way, be there in twenty minutes!” That was Speedy—always there when you needed him.

Our hearts are with Shaun, Scott, Dixie, and the entire Bemiller family as they face the loss of Steve. Back in the 80s and 90s so many of us at the track were blessed to know Steve and Dixie, and their friendship was something you could always count on. Steve was the kind of man who showed up for people, who made time, and who left you better off for having shared the day with him.

To Shaun, Scott, Dixie, and the family - may you find comfort in knowing how deeply Steve was loved and respected. He leaves behind not only cherished memories, but a legacy of kindness and friendship that will never fade.

Sending prayers, strength, and peace to you all in this difficult time.
