What says better than i ever could….

Post- show seeking comfort and community at .
Over the past 17 years on a live radio show, I’ve had to say a lot of things on the fly. My high point was announcing the election of the first female Veep in American history in 2020.
My low point was today, having to report the tragic death of MN lawmaker Melissa Hortman, Speaker of the House, who was assassinated in her home.
Weekly Dish is not just a food show with recipes, it’s a show about feeding your loved ones and nourishing your community. I thought a lot about this in the tiny diner with 14 seats, where sometimes they ask you to scooch down in the middle of eating, to make room for others. And we do that, without any fuss, with no entitlement or pissyness because it’s really not that hard, and hey you’re eating blueberry pancakes so life is already pretty good.
Al’s is a place that reaches forward and back, through generations of college kids who may own it religiously for four years, and then pass it on as they leave for new lives. But they come back, to remember or introduce their own kids to a warm part of their soul, and sit among strange faces of many colors united only by hash browns.
And since, after nearly 75 years of griddle magic, no one group can truly own it, we all can. I hope this never becomes a rarity.
I hope we can continue to sit at the counter together and choose lives for ourselves without fear. Without someone standing at the door, deciding who gets a seat and who doesn’t.
