FACT: If you can't twist your shoulders you CAN'T use your butt!

YES....our glutes are the biggest, strongest muscles we have.
NO...they don't work alone!
In fact, they NEED other parts to their jobs or there will be problems.
"SAY WHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAT?!?!?!?"
Think about walking/running for a second.
As we step FORWARD, our opposite HAND reaches forward. When this happens, our shoulder follows our hand and as a result our upper body twists over our leg. This helps to stretch our glute muscle as our foot hits the ground. This is a GOOD THING for 2 reasons:
1. The stretching action helps to SLOW the foot down as it lands. This helps to REDUCE IMPACT, which could save the foot, knee, and hip from excessive stress. (ie - make us absorb shock better!)
2. Another way of thinking the act of a muscle stretching is to think of it as "loading." Similar to what happens when you stretch a rubber band, you are building up energy in it. This energy will be used to "push" you into your next step.
Without your UPPER BACK twisting, you will compensate. This means stress in places you don't want it.
