Today is Caregiver Appreciation Day. This day honors the nearly 40 million caregivers across the country who quietly and consistently care for elderly parents, disabled loved ones, and those facing illness. The conversation was heartfelt and timely thanks to our guest Pastor Jeannette B. Jordan, Founder of Journey to the Cross Ministries and CEO of Dementia Dignified Academy.
We reflected on Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who spotlighted the caregiving for Jessie Jackson Sr. He said, "Caregiving for my father, Rev. Jessie Jackson, showed me the real cost of care." As we enter Women's History Month, we remember other community leaders we've recently lost. In recognition of Caregiver Appreciation Day and the theme "Celebrating the Heart in Care," Rev. Jeanette B. Jordan shared her powerful journey caring for her husband through Alzheimer's. She reminded listeners that caregiving is compassion in motion, but it is also labor, and that caregivers must be supported with education, patience, and dignity. Jordan shares this in her book "Journey of Compassion" about her powerful journey caring for her husband through Alzheimer's.
We highlighted the upcoming Dear Me Care Circle Pre-Mother's Day Caregiver Awards Brunch on May 2 at Malcolm X College, continuing the mission to honor both professional and family caregivers who lead with heart.
