On today’s , we spoke with Karl A. Brinson, a lifelong West Side resident and President of the Chicago Westside Branch NAACP. A dedicated community leader and member of the Moore Park Advisory Council, Karl has spent decades advocating for equity, justice, and opportunity in Chicago.

He joined us to share details about the Freedom Fund Concert Fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025 at the Kehrein Center for the Arts, featuring the incomparable Terisa Griffin. This inspiring evening of live music and community will unite voices for justice.

HPUC is celebrating 150 years with a free Ghanaian choral concert on Saturday, July 26 at 5 p.m., led by acclaimed composer James Varrick Armaah. The church—now a Chicago Landmark—also continues to serve the community through its food pantry and recent $500K tower restoration.

Today on Community Chatter, I was joined by our Marketing Communications Coordinator, Ronnita Dumas, to talk about the work we do at Wyn-Win Communications to engage communities and support impactful causes.

We discussed our partnerships with organizations like HSI, working with Donald Dew and Lisa Rollins, and our ongoing work with UNCF to help the next generation access higher education without the burden of student debt—something Ronnita has experienced personally.

She also shared her journey in communications and reflected on meeting Rev. Jesse Jackson during our time working with Rainbow PUSH Coalition, a moment that continues to inspire our commitment to purpose-driven work.

Thank you to Yirser Ra Hotep and Darlene Blackburn for joining us on Community Chatter to share the spirit and purpose behind Soul Yoga Fest.

Yirser Ra Hotep shared his upcoming celebration of 50 years of dedication to Kemetic Yoga and cultural wellness with the Soul Yoga Fest Legacy Award Dinner on July 11 and the free, family-friendly Soul Yoga Festival on July 12.

Friday, July 11 – Soul Yoga Fest Legacy Award Dinner (6–9 PM at Fuller Park Field House): A special evening honoring Yirser Ra Hotep’s life work, featuring a catered dinner, live performances, and cultural tributes. Proceeds support scholarships for Kemetic Yoga Teacher Training.

Saturday, July 12 – 16th Annual Soul Yoga Fest (9 AM–5 PM, same location): A free festival with Kemetic Yoga, meditation, dance, martial arts, youth empowerment sessions from Hip Hop Detoxx, and free HIV/AIDS testing for adults and seniors.

Bring your mat, your energy, and your community—this is more than an event, it’s a movement for mind, body, and soul.

Today on Community Chatter, we welcomed Credell Walls, Manager of Sand Ridge Nature Center, to share details about the Forest Preserves of Cook County’s 12th Annual Juneteenth Jubilee.

Taking place Saturday, June 21 at Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland, this free, family-friendly event honors Black history and culture through music, storytelling, historical presentations, and community engagement.

Highlights include a ceremonial cake cutting and remarks by President Toni Preckwinkle, cultural dance and drum performances, youth activities, guided nature walks, and local vendors. The event also features genealogy resources, outdoor exhibits, and food available both free and for purchase.

The Juneteenth Jubilee offers a meaningful way to celebrate freedom, family, and heritage in a vibrant natural setting

Thank you to Katrina Waddy for guest hosting today’s Community Chatter.

As we observe , we highlight the ongoing work of organizations like Acclivus that are focused on building safer communities.

LeVon Stone, Sr. shared his story as a gunshot survivor and how that experience led him to co-found Acclivus with Dr. Joseph Strickland. Since 2020, Acclivus has distributed more than $27 million in grants to 42 community subgrantees. From January to May 2025 alone, the organization completed 930 conflict mediations and responded to 512 hospital cases.

LeVon Stone, Sr. is also recognized as one of the youngest Black leaders in Community Violence Intervention.

Today on , our guest was Barbara Deer, Executive Director of Juneteenth Illinois, for joining us on .
Ms. Deer discussed the 5th Annual Cook County Juneteenth Illinois Celebration on June 14th at Malcolm X College. The event will address Health, Education, Wealth, and Justice through panel discussions and community programming.
She spoke about continuing the work started by the late Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer and building community connections. The celebration includes a scholarship reception with Mayor Brandon Johnson, where $10,000 in scholarships will be awarded. All programming is free and open to the public.

Today on Community Chatter we welcomed Sherina Maye Edwards, 2025 UNCF Gala Chair, to share what’s ahead for the 25th Annual UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala. Join UNCF on June 14 at The Geraghty as the iconic Black & White Ball returns for this milestone celebration!

Sherina and the UNCF team are working to raise $1 million to support scholarships for Illinois students, building on last year’s $700,000 and helping more than 500 students statewide pursue their college dreams.
