We are close to the end of Day 1 of the sold out 2025 Construction Tech Conference and the enthusiasm for innovation and intra-industry collaboration is palpable. This is a group that wants to learn and move the built world forward.

After a filling breakfast (courtesy of ABLEMKR WORK), Burns & McDonnell Chief of Innovation Matthew Olson set the tone early on, with an inspiring presentation on the value of innovative action. "Ideas are cheap," he said. "Action is tough."

It was an ideal way to start an event where practical, impactful innovation is largely remaining front and center. On the main stage, following Olson, innovation leaders from Mortenson, RG Construction Services, Doxel, and EllisDon Corporation explored the emerging technologies that contractors are already working into construction processes; and following that was a session in which experts from industry leaders Kajima, Pepper Construction Group, and VINCI gave the audience a peak inside their respective company's approach to building more sustainably. Our final main stage session before breaking for lunch saw Mass Mobility Hub Executive Director Jamey Tesler facilitating leaders from Donald Borg Construction, MJ Harris Construction Services, Enlaye, and HENSEL PHELPS in an exploration of the tools and strategies helping contractors refine and/or transform their project management systems for the better.

Meanwhile, in our breakout rooms, we heard from Constructiviq CEO Sadanand Sahasrabudhe and an expert from Barton Malow's LIFTbuild discuss a novel approach to procurement planning and material tracking, while leaders from Graycor, Northwestern University, JLL and Engage Civil Incorporated discussed how to build and leverage the intricate relationships that exist between owners and developers.

The 2024 Construction Tech Conference was one of our biggest events ever, drawing hundreds of industry executives, leaders, and innovators from around the globe. This year's is set to be even bigger.

The 2025 Construction Tech Conference will be our biggest event ever. Over two days, we'll hear from 88 speakers and presenters, who'll take part in 18 main stage sessions—including panels, presentations, and live case studies—10 breakout sessions, and a full scale Demo Day Competition, featuring eight promising startups native to the industry: Anyset AI, DRAWER AI, NanoTherm, AIRA, PRIVV, Frontier Audio, Rooster Asset Tracking, and C.Scale.

Like last year's event, where STO Building Group (Structure Tone) Chief Innovation Officer Robert Leon kicked us off with an inspiring discussion on the history of innovation in a fractured industry, this year's conference will begin with a keynote presentation from Burns & McDonnell Chief Innovation Officer Matthew Olson. Olson will aim to set the tone for this week's event by examining our industry's use of technology and innovation, looking at how technology can simplify operations, how disruption can drive progress, and how each of us can play a role in shaping what's next.

That perspective on the impact a single person can make in our industry is central to this year's Construction Tech Conference theme: Augmenting individual performance with today's technology. Outsmarting the labor shortage, redefining "productivity" for the modern AEC industry, finding systems and technologies that provide meaningful impact at a variety of scales—these and more are the goals that will be driving discussion at this week's event. Saravana Vennelakanti is something of a triple threat in the AEC world. He's worked as an architect, an owner's representative, and a general contractor. That unique blend of experience gives him a valuable perspective on what it really takes to bring tech innovation onto a jobsite and have it adopted and implemented effectively—which is one of the reasons we were so excited to be able to sit down with him for an interview before he takes the stage at next week's Construction Tech Conference.

"It’s easy to misunderstand design intent, especially in the early stages of drawings," says Saravana, who now draws on all his various experiences as a project manager for Donald Borg Construction. "Being able to step into the shoes of all stakeholders helps the entire team communicate and collaborate better."

That understanding, Saravana says, is particularly helpful when it comes to when and how to introduce new tech into a company's existing construction process without disrupting the collaborative process. In our interview, he recalled a specific time in which this combination close coordination and technology was able to avoid a costly problem.

"For more of our projects, we use 360° cameras to create regular virtual walkthroughs throughout the course of the project that are then shared with all stakeholders," he says, explaining a project in which a site was captured post framing but prior to the MEP being installed. "A client’s team clicked through the walkthrough and realized that the location of the demising wall was different than what was required per the lease."

A change that made it into the lease but never the construction drawings, which meant that it would've otherwise never been caught until the final walkthrough.

"Had we continued without catching the problem until the end of the project, the job would have been delayed by months and rework would have cost over 10 times more to rectify."

In a global review of construction inspection services published in 2022 in ASCE Publishing's Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, it was found that the No. 1 factor negatively affecting building inspections was "careless inspections." Something that becomes a non-issue when deploying a robot for the job.

Other top factors negatively impacting inspections were "delays in site control visits," "paper-based inspection process," "inadequate control of inspection parties," "lack of qualified inspectors," "late delivery of feedback and control reports," and "lack of usage of technological tools during inspection." Of the top 10 factors, nearly all could be at least somewhat (if not totally) solved by the use of robotics—which is perhaps why the occupation has seen such a significant influx of robotic technologies over the last several years, as evidenced by our recently released Robotics Top 50.

In the 2025 Robotics Top 50, our research team identified six robotics companies—Field AI, ScoutDI, Boston Dynamics, Voliro, 3D Robotics Inc., and Acuity Robotics—successfully taking on the task of inspection and QA. The Contractor’s Choice and Tech Excellence Awards are set for their inaugural ceremony at the 2025 Construction Tech Conference, taking place July 8-9 in Chicago’s historic Willis Tower.

The awards stem from the BuiltWorlds Benchmarking Program, a series of research reports derived from both qualitative and quantitative data collected from the field. Each report identifies the top performing and most implemented technologies (ie, Top Solutions) as well as the contractors most effective at leveraging those technologies (ie, Digital Leaders) in a number of categories.

“While our research identifies categorical top performers—like, for example, the top reality capture software or site safety technology as part of our Field Solutions Benchmarking Report—our awards go beyond that to spotlight the true best of the best across entire genres of AEC tech,” says Audrey Lynch, the senior analyst in charge of BuiltWorlds Benchmarking Program.

At the 2025 Innovating Building Materials & Supply Chain Demo Day Competition, in the early moments of Sean Petterson's pitch for his company Supersede, he laid his value proposition simply, saying, "What we do is pretty straight forward: We're making better materials that are better for our environment, and doing it at a reasonable price."

While the company builds materials for multiple industries, it's specifically entering the construction market with a plastic-based alternative to plywood.

"Environmentally, what we're talking about is a massive impact," said Petterson, reassuring that the volume of plastic in the country far exceeds the amount necessary to exchange all lumber products for plastic alternatives. "Our goal is to continue to divert some of the plastic from going to landfills, and find a better alternative. This is how we solve it."

Using material science and unique additives and processes, Petterson and his team have found a way to make plastics structural, with 1/100th the carbon footprint of traditional wood-based sheathing suppliers.

"We can make a material that really is a one-to-one replacement for OSB," Petterson said. "There's no knots. It's a very consistent product we can make at a very high rate."

But it takes more than great partners to successfully pull off an event like this year's Paris Summit. It also takes a great team.

Robots and construction are a destined pair. With a crippling labor shortage that seems to have no feasible end being compounded by a multi-decade stagnation in productivity, physical automation and augmentation is all but inevitable in our industry. Cemex Ventures estimates that the market for construction robots will reach $774.6 million by 2032, which would amount to a 360% increase in just 10 years.

But while an industry where robots are commonplace may be years away, plenty of these machines have already found their way onto jobsites, transforming how contractors build. For early adopters, robotics are quickly becoming differentiators.

They've invested in entrepreneurs and startups responsible for innovations in nearly every category; launched and supported initiatives aimed at improving productivity and quality of life across the board; developed products and procedures that are transforming how we build and live; and that is just scratching the surface.

This year's Paris Summit Demo Day competition saw innovators from throughout the global AEC industry showcasing their solutions to some of the built world's most pressing, inhibiting problems.

We saw solutions for more efficient, compliant designs and improved grid optimization in buildings. We saw high-performance slab systems and an end-to-end logistics platform that digitizes circular supply chains for scalable recycling and materials recovery. We saw a host of promising, potentially transformative innovations. But as impressive as all of the contestant companies were, there can be only one winner (or in this particular case two, as we segmented this year's competition into early-stage and growth/later-stage startups).

Our early-stage winner was Hive Autonomy, pitched by the company's co-founder and CCO, Fredrik Bringager.

Hive is a company specializing in remote-controlled and autonomous load handling, offering a retrofit solution to turn new and existing machines into robots.

"Those machines are already on some of your jobsites," he said, referencing wheel loaders and excavators. "This is the vision that we see. Machines that run around, can coordinate, do tasks fully autonomously."

Our growth/later-stage winner was Document Crunch, pitched by the company's CTO, Trent Miskelly.

Document Crunch is a risk reduction and document management platform, using AI to review more documents quicker and with more accuracy, helping to inform and ultimately guide decision-making throughout the construction process. In his pitch, Miskelly laid out the the reasoning behind the platform's creation, citing serious challenges in accuracy that often lead to disputes and sometimes even costly litigation.

"The two main reasons that these disputes occur on projects is, one, errors in omissions in contract documents; and two, the people who most need to understand their obligations don't, and then they failed to meet those obligations during the construction project."
