Remembering Alvin “Big Al” Sams: A Legacy of Love, Laughter & Community

The NABJ Sacramento family is deeply saddened by the passing of Alvin “Big Al” Sams, a beloved journalist, radio personality, and community advocate whose warmth and passion touched countless lives.

For more than 25 years, Big Al was a fixture in Northern California media, bringing joy and light to audiences as a feature reporter on Good Day and a trusted voice on the radio. But beyond the cameras and microphones, he was a champion for the community—always using his platform to uplift others, share powerful stories, and support causes that mattered.

His work extended far beyond the newsroom. Big Al dedicated himself to organizations like the American Cancer Society, The SOL Project, MLK365, the American Diabetes Association, and many more, always fighting for equity, awareness, and social justice. Whether he was emceeing events, mentoring youth, or helping the unsheltered, he poured his heart into every endeavor.

Even in recent months, while on medical leave, he remained committed to making a difference. He was excited to join NABJ Sacramento, eager to connect, support, and share his wisdom. His kindness, humility, and love for people were truly unmatched.

We honor Big Al’s legacy—one built on generosity, service, and an unwavering belief in the power of storytelling. His impact will live on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the community he loved so deeply.

Rest well, Big Al. Your voice, your presence, and your spirit will never be forgotten.

Ginger Rutland: A Sacramento Broadcast Trailblazer

Ginger Rutland’s name is etched in Sacramento’s media history as a trailblazer who shattered barriers and redefined journalism. As KCRA’s first Black female anchor, Ginger broke through the glass ceiling during a time when opportunities for women of color were scarce. Her bold on-air presence brought a fresh perspective to local news and inspired countless aspiring journalists with her beacon of resilience and excellence.

Entering a predominantly white, male newsroom, Ginger’s rise to the anchor desk was groundbreaking. Her incisive reporting, warm demeanor, and steadfast commitment to truth resonated deeply with Sacramento’s diverse communities. Whether covering social justice issues or local events, she delivered every story with integrity and empathy. Beyond her on-air achievements, Ginger has served as a mentor and role model, paving the way for future generations of Black women in media. Her journey is a powerful reminder that representation matters and that breaking barriers transforms lives.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor Ginger Rutland’s immense contributions and lasting impact on Sacramento journalism.

Honoring a Trailblazer: Adrian Woodfork

During Black History Month, we celebrate the pioneers who shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations. One such groundbreaker is Adrian Woodfork, the first African American anchor, photographer, and reporter at KCRA 3 News in Sacramento.

Hired in 1970, Woodfork broke through racial barriers in television journalism, starting as an entry-level film editor before becoming a photographer and the station’s first Black reporter. His impact extended far beyond the newsroom—he created and hosted “To Be Somebody,” a prime-time public affairs show that highlighted the African American experience, running for nearly two decades.

Woodfork’s storytelling took him across the globe, reporting from places like Uganda and Jamaica, and later, his freelance career saw him working on major shows like “America’s Most Wanted” and “Inside Edition.”

Even after leaving TV news, his passion for storytelling never faded. He continued to make an impact as a producer, editor, community activist, and one of the few African American professional dog show judges in the country.

His journey is one of resilience, excellence, and trailblazing leadership—a true testament to the power of breaking barriers and lifting others up along the way.

Saluting Adrian Woodfork—a Sacramento legend and media pioneer!
