Opinion. President Donald Trump has long demonstrated a talent for distraction — often redirecting public attention whenever an issue arises that he would rather avoid.

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Human trafficking is organized crime and a crisis that affects Indigenous communities in the United States and around the world. Too many are still being exploited for forced labor, sexual exploitation, and violence, often using technology and global networks to evade justice.

In Indian Country, the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) shows how urgent this fight is. Traffickers take advantage of gaps in laws and resources, making Native women, girls, and relatives especially vulnerable. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is a step forward, but more must be done to protect our people and bring traffickers to justice.

On this day, NCAI calls on law enforcement, community members, and leaders across Indian Country to work together, raise awareness, and ensure survivors have access to justice and support. Ending trafficking takes all of us.
