Globally, the demand for coal continues to grow as industrialized and developing nations’ demand for low-cost energy increases. Department of Energy has forecast total worldwide energy demand will gr

ow more than 55% and coal use is forecast to grow 74%. produced more than 1 billion tons of coal in 2009 and the industry was expecting to match that performance in 2010. More than 93% of coal consumption in the U.S. is used for electrical power generation. As a fuel source, coal continues to provide nearly 50% of total electricity generation in the U.S. Electricity demand is a function of gross domestic product and residential demand. The economic downturn had a big impact on the U.S. The combined effect of a decrease in industrial demand coupled with high stocks created a somewhat soft market. The market came back into balance during the summer of 2010. Coking coals are also required to make steel. High quality coking coals are a finite resource and, during 2010, spot prices from coking coal were trading higher than $250/ton. This is a considerable premium over steam coals, which are used for power generation and selling for about $65/ton. Some of the best coking coals can be found in West Virginia, Virginia and Alabama. Coal Age remains the best choice for advertisers selling machinery and services to reach coal mining and processing professionals. As Coal Age nears its centenary, we are proud not only of our longevity, but of the quality of the publication we continue to create. As the industry changes and responds to new challenges, Coal Age will continue to lead with meaningful—and fearless—editorial that commands respect from a demanding and loyal readership. No other publication comes close to Coal Age’s circulation and no other publication can promise advertisers the return on their advertising investment. The most widely read and most respected magazine in the industry is still your best choice to reach your audience.

NIOSH Mining Researchers Need Your Help

During April, more than 700 mining-related researchers were downsized from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). They were a small slice of the Trump Administration’s efforts to slash NIOSH staffing levels by 20,000 positions, but their work was important to us. After taking some heat publicly, the Depart of the Health and Human Services recalled 100 workers to the NIOSH office in Morgantown. It operates the Coal Worker’s Health Surveillance Program, which offers periodic black lung screenings at no cost to coal miners.
