illpaso WEEKLY MIXTAPE – SEPTEMBER 23, 2026
Pop Tha Trunk at Haynes Canyon Vista | Boom Bap & Underground Hip Hop
Now on Mixcloud @ Digumsmak
Available Soon On YouTube @ Boom Bap Daily
This week’s ILL Paso Weekly Mixtape turned into something a little different!
The original plan was to drive up to Sunspot, New Mexico and set up for a Pop Tha Trunk DJ Mix. But after turning onto the Sunspot Highway near Cloudcroft, the fog started getting thicker and the conditions along the drive began changing fast.
Instead of continuing farther toward Sunspot, I decided to pull over at the Haynes Canyon Vista Observation Site.
And that became the spot.
I opened up the back of the Toyota 4Runner, set up the DJ equipment and turned this week’s ILL Paso Weekly Mixtape into a Pop Tha Trunk session right there in the mountains.
Pop Tha Trunk is my mobile DJ mix series recorded and performed LIVE from a Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner is a big part of the concept—drive out, find a location, pop the trunk, set up the equipment and start mixing. From desert locations to mountain roads, the Toyota 4Runner has become part of the visual identity and adventure behind the Pop Tha Trunk mixes.
This entire DJ set was also streamed LIVE on TikTok, giving everyone watching the stream a chance to experience the session as it happened—from setting up at the overlook to dropping Boom Bap and Underground Hip Hop surrounded by the foggy mountain atmosphere of Southern New Mexico.
No studio. No prerecorded set. Just the 4Runner, the DJ equipment, the mountains and a LIVE mix from the side of the Sunspot Highway.
Musically, this one stays locked into Boom Bap and Underground Hip Hop, moving through classic cuts, underground favorites and West Coast underground joints. Planet Asia, The Roots, Nas, Killah Priest, Dilated Peoples, Prodigy, Aceyalone, Da Beatminerz, Volume 10, Hieroglyphics, Freestyle Fellowship, Cali Agents, O.C., Living Legends and more all make their way into the session.
Sometimes the best DJ sessions aren't the ones you planned.
The destination was supposed to be Sunspot.
The fog said otherwise.
So I pulled over the 4Runner, popped the trunk, went LIVE on TikTok and let the music take it from there.
