Beyond Mike Davis’s provocative title to his classic essay, “The Case for Letting Malibu Burn,” is the thesis that resources and attention is disproportionately allocated to save the rich at the expense of the poor. While this is historically the case, the fires raging across LA tonight are far worse than even the great Mike Davis could have foreseen.
Schools are burning, libraries, restaurants, stores, mobile home parks, apartment buildings. People will die. Lives are being destroyed.
Crews aren’t trying to stop Malibu from burning. Or the Palisades, Topanga, Pasadena or Altadena. They can’t. There is not time and no way to do so. They are attempting to save lives as the embers fly and the winds howl through the canyons.
This is shaping up to be a firestorm that will forever alter this city. Not just the wealthy in their Malibu mansions, but all of us. The scars will run deep and be long lasting, and of course, and Mike would have pointed out; the poor will suffer the greatest.
