We are back with another post from our AAC series!

This week, we’re talking about another low-tech AAC option...Standardized Tactile Augmentative Communication Symbols—STACS for short! STACS is a unique communication system that uses real, 3D objects to help kids express themselves. It’s especially helpful for children with visual impairments who may have a harder time using picture-based or tech-based AAC options. By using objects they can touch and explore, STACS makes communication more hands-on and accessible.

✨ Dressing Skills by Age: An OT Guide for Parents ✨

Each week, we’re sharing simple, practical dressing skills your child can work toward at each stage of development. As pediatric occupational therapists, we know dressing is about building independence, confidence, and everyday motor skills.

👶 This week: 2 ½-year-olds!
We’ll cover what dressing skills are typical around 2.5 years, how to encourage participation without battles, and ways to help your toddler build confidence while getting dressed.

If dressing is a struggle or your child is getting frustrated, OT can help!

We are back this week with our AAC series!

This time, we’re shining the spotlight on “low-tech” AAC options, but first, let’s break down what that means. Unlike “no-tech” AAC (which relies on things like gestures or sign language), low-tech AAC involves tools to support communication but without the use of electronics or batteries. These are simple, reliable methods that don’t depend on power or screens to make communication possible.

One of the most well-known examples of low-tech AAC is the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). PECS uses pictures to help individuals share their wants, needs, and ideas. For example, a child might hand a picture of a snack to their caregiver to say, “I’m hungry,” or offer a picture of a toy to ask for playtime. These visual tools open the door to meaningful interactions and help individuals express themselves when words alone are hard to find.

This week, we’re kicking off our Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) series!

To start things off, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the most important (and often overlooked) categories: “no-tech” AAC options.

So, what exactly does “no-tech” mean? Simply put, these are communication strategies that don’t require devices, gadgets, or fancy tools. Think of it as the foundation of AAC. Examples include writing or drawing messages, using American Sign Language (ASL), or even communicating through gestures like pointing, nodding, or reaching. These methods may seem simple, but they can be incredibly effective for expressing wants, needs, and ideas in meaningful ways.
