Plans are in the works to bring a new, state-of-the-art Life Time facility to Maple Grove. Life Time is planning a 120,000-square-foot, 2-story building that’s nearly twice the space of the existing Maple Grove location. The future facility would have the latest amenities, including a large outdoor pool deck and indoor pickleball courts. The Maple Grove Planning Commission recommended approval this week.

Bilal Mamdani discovered pandemic baking during the COVID shutdowns. He created a Basque-style cheesecake, a dessert that originated in Spain. “Which is a very creamy cheesecake. It's crust-less, so it's naturally gluten-free,” said Mamdani. He eventually got so good at making the dessert that he decided to launch his own business called Crème.

That appears to be the direction the city of Brooklyn Park will take as it seeks ways to pay for a proposed expansion of the city's Community Activity Center. The city sought bonding at the state legislature over the last two years for the expansion, but to no avail. It appears the city will now try again in 2026.

The JCPenney in Maple Grove shut its doors in 2020. Now, a nonprofit arts group called Grove Square Studios is proposing to turn the empty storefront into a wide variety of uses, including theater, dance, music and physical art.

A Brooklyn Center boy accidentally drowned after swimming at Baker Park Reserve in western Hennepin County, authorities said. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, 8-year-old Karmon Conneh died after swimming Friday at a beach along Lake Independence.

Thousands were without Monday morning across the northwest suburbs after powerful storms hit the area Sunday night. Winds at the Crystal Airport were measured at more than 60 miles per hour just before 8 p.m. Sunday. Those winds knocked out power and damaged trees. Neighborhoods in Golden Valley bore the brunt of the impact.
