FOR ERIC’S CASSETTE COLLECTION, we’ve lost a lot of people lately, and the news about Chuck Mangione, who passed away at age 84, means we should bring up his huge hit, “Feels So Good.” The song was also the name of the album, which came out in December 1977. World-renowned for his playing of the flugelhorn and trumpet, as well as song compositions, Mangione released more than 30 albums starting in the 1960s. “Feels So Good” was over 9 minutes long on the album, the shorter edit for radio - which Chuck described as “major surgery” - is about 3 ½ minutes. It hit #4 on the Billboard HOT100 in June 1978, one of the few instrumentals to go top 5. Fans of the show King of the Hill certainly got a taste of Chuck Mangione! Let’s feel so good and give Chuck a salute just after 8am on Lake961! – Eric Paulsen

🎶 ERIC’S CASSETTE COLLECTION 🎶

Let’s “Creep” into things with TLC, performing at Genesee Theatre August 2nd - and don’t forget you can win tickets around 8:25!

The song “Creep” from their 1994 album CrazySexyCool, was a sneaky tune in itself. Written by TLC’s Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and producer Dallas Austin (whose middle name is probably Houston of San Antonio or something), it’s based on Watkins' experience with infidelity. The lyrics portray them as women who cheat on their unfaithful lovers for "some affection". It was controversial within the group; Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes reportedly threatened to wear black tape over her mouth on its accompanying music video. But eventually, she didn’t.
“Creep” became TLC’s first #1 hit on the Billboard HOT100, topping the chart for four weeks. Lopes is no longer with us, but the others are and they’ll be in Waukegan on August 2nd - let’s show them some affection with “Creep” just after 8am on Lake961! – Eric Paulsen

🎶 ERIC’S CASSETTE COLLECTION 🎶

Today we remember the godfather of British metal, the Prince of Darkness, and semi-regular ol’ dad: Ozzy Osbourne. 🖤

Less than three weeks after his final concert performance with the other original members of his band Black Sabbath, Ozzy passed away at age 76 after a long battle with Parkinson’s.

Today, we salute him with a cut off his Diary of a Madman album: “Flying High Again,” which was also one of the last cuts to feature guitarist Randy Rhoads too, before his 1982 passing. “Flying High Again” was presumed by many to be about drugs, while Ozzy said the song was about his re-emergence as a solo artist after thinking his career was over after Black Sabbath fired him in 1979.

While not a single on the Billboard HOT100, “Flying High Again” hit #2 on the Rock Tracks chart in 1982 and remains one of my favorites by him. Let’s salute Ozzy and fly high with him just after 8am on Lake961! – Eric Paulsen

FOR ERIC’S CASSETTE COLLECTION, bow wow wow yippie-yo yippie-yay! It’s the funkmaster George Clinton’s birthday, so let’s groove with “Atomic Dog.” This classic funk song explains why men are always going after women: It's because they have a little dog in ‘em, and dogs chase cats. Released in 1982, the “bow wow” theme throughout this jam resonated through the emerging hip-hop community, influencing eventual rappers like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Lil’ Bow Wow. “Atomic Dog,” the last release off their Computer Games album, was the last P-Funk record to hit #1 on the R&B charts after their hge run as George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic in the 70s. Clinton admitted many of the lyrics were ad-libbed during the song’s recording; the unique rhythm is a simple two-bar drum beat, played backwards using tape. It’s been in tons of movies and commercials, and with George celebrating his 84th birthday, let’s bark along to “Atomic Dog” just after 8am on Lake961! – Eric Paulsen

FOR ERIC’S CASSETTE COLLECTION, let’s put on the Ritz this Monday with a classic 80s hit from Taco, who celebrates his 70th birthday today. Not to be confused with “Rizz,” which da kids say today, to be “Puttin’ on the Ritz” means to dress very fashionably back in the day. And I do mean BACK - this song was written in 1927 by Irving Berlin! Harry Richman and Fred Astaire did versions of the song back in the day and it was featured in a number in Mel Brooks’ 1974 classic Young Frankenstein. Taco Ockerse (who just went by “Taco”) put his synth-pop version out in 1982 and it hit #4 on the US Billboard HOT100 in 1983; it topped the charts in Sweden and New Zealand, and entered the top 5 in Australia, Norway, Austria, and Canada. Even though Taco updated a few lyrics, the success of the song made 95-year-old Irving Berlin the oldest living songwriter ever with a single in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 at that time. Let’s put it on just after 8am on Lake961! – Eric Paulsen
