The East Tennessean team took home three awards from the Society of Professional Journalists East Tennessee Chapter last night! SPJ is the oldest and most broad-spanning professional development organization for journalists across the United States. Our three recipients got the opportunity to network with industry professionals in print, television, radio, and podcast journalism from across Tennessee. We’re so proud of our staff for all they have contributed this year!

Two East Tennessean Executive Editors received distinguished awards Thursday, April 10.
Macy Strader, 2024-25 Executive Editor, was awarded Outstanding University Sponsored Organization President at the annual Summit Awards. The Summit Awards are ETSU's premier recognition event for outstanding campus programs and distinguished student leaders, which celebrates the superior accomplishments of students outside the classroom.
Connor Lute, 2023-24 Executive Editor, was awarded the inaugural Jack Mooney Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Media and Communication at the ETSU College of Business and Technology Celebration of Student Excellence.
Strader's nominations highlighted her leadership during the Hurricane Helene crisis. She led planning and coverage of a special edition devoted to Helene aftermath less than a week after the storm struck.
Lute now works as a digital communication specialist for Nissan. He graduated with a degree in Media and Communication in December 2024.
The 2024-25 academic year marks Media and Communication's first year as part of the College of Business and Technology. The top undergraduate student award was named in honor of the late Jack Mooney, a journalism leader in the department for 40 years.
Presenting Lute's award was Don Armstrong, Director of Student Media and East Tennessean adviser. Lute designated Armstrong as his "Most Influential Person" during his time at ETSU.

Reports of shots fired at Sam Wilson Hall on the East Tennessee State University campus was sent in a campus emergency alert at 9:31 Tuesday morning, but turned out to be a false alarm.

The alert was sent in response to a student’s report of unidentified sounds later acknowledged as coming from campus construction of a new building going up next to Sam Wilson Hall, according to ETSU officials. Campus authorities say there was no threat to campus or casualties.

At 9:37 an all clear was issued following the initial alert.

Campus had seemingly returned to normal operation shortly thereafter. By 10 a.m. students were entering and exiting Sam Wilson Hall as normal.

As the fall semester begins, ETSU women’s triathlon head coach Allie Nicosia has unveiled the Buccaneers’ 2024 fall schedule. This season, the Bucs will face many challenges that will test the determination of the team. The Bucs are preparing for five key events.
