Also played Ray of Light video at my last RETROnic Rewind to great dance floor response. Looking forward to this. 🚀
Back in the mists of ‘97 with M here was this subtext of Veronica Electronica. Madonna enjoys exploring personas, I knew this going in, and found it a delight when I was with her. And she celebrates alternative personas in others, as part of her sense of fun. Although neither of us were particularly more ‘electronic’ in the music we were making at the time of “Ray of Light” than we had been with either of our workings immediately prior to that, there was definitely that shift in emphasis.
I also like the name ‘Nonnie’. I’m not breaking a secret here, but definitely shining a light on a charming aspect of her that doesn’t seem generally known when I say that she has also been known by that name. One time I was in that studio in Burbank with her, and apropos something or other traditional we were discussing, I went: “Hey Nonnie”. As in: “🎵Hey nonnie nonnie no 🎵”, a barely remembered line from an old English folk tune. But she did a double take on the ‘nonnie’ (spelled ‘nonny’?), and revealed that at a young age when her siblings were unable yet to pronounce ‘Madonna’ thatthat was what she was known in the family circle. “How did you know?” She asked. And I explained about that old folk song. That moment really stuck with me. Along with so many others of course.
In my own recent totally live performance preparation bubble I wasn’t actually aware of the her current V.E. re-examination, until just today, checking back in on socials. It’s nice to have that album ‘reconsidered’. I performed the song “Ray of Light” at this small but fantastically vibey venue The Notting Hill Arts Club a week ago, and the audience blew the rafters off with their singing along. Was SO much fun. I must post a clip
So here’s to Veronica!!!
And me performing at the Albert Hall y’all. All the hits!
