Dr. Gerald L. Miller, 1937-2025
Gerald L. Miller, M.D., age 88, passed peacefully into the arms of God on Sept. 10, 2025. Gerald was kind-hearted, conscientious, and unflappable; a civic-minded physician much loved by family, friends, former medical colleagues, and former patients. His life passion was to serve God by serving others, and that desire knew no bounds and no borders.

Gerald was born on Aug. 12, 1937, Gerald was the son of Perry J. Miller and Olive Lucile Miller. He grew up on a farm near Shipshewana, in a Mennonite family with a strong lineage of teachers, farmers, and mission workers. During his high school years, he raised calves for 4-H, played guard for his school’s basketball team, worked as school janitor, and painted houses and barns with his father. He also dated a classmate, Mary Mishler, whom he married while in his second year of premed at Goshen College.

After graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine, Gerald set up a family practice with his medical partner, Dr. Lee Kinzer, in the small town of Markle. For 42 years, he worked in this largely rural area south of Fort Wayne. During this time, Gerald regularly made house calls to those unable to come to the office and developed community home health care and hospice services. To provide better emergency care for his patients, he helped his community develop the first rural EMT and paramedic services in Northeast Indiana. Making the Rounds: Memoirs of a Small-Town Doctor (Booklocker, 2015) is Gerald’s love letter to the town of Markle.

From 1971-72, Gerald and Mary, along with their three children spent a year of service with Eastern Mennonite Mission Board in Somalia, East Africa. Gerald recounts this year in his memoir, A Hundred Camels (Cascadia, 2009). Over the course of thirty-two years, he also made twenty-five trips to Project Help in Haiti. There, with the effort of other doctors in his medical practice and support from the Churches of God, he helped establish a medical clinic and then a hospital.

In 2006, Gerald and Mary moved to Westfield, Indiana, where for years Gerald enjoyed gardening, reading, golfing, playing card games, working on puzzles, and watching IU and Pacer basketball. He and Mary liked to travel, often with friends from their church, First Mennonite of Indianapolis.

Parkinson’s Disease slowed Gerald down, but Mary’s loving care was a constant through difficult times. They celebrated their 69th anniversary on Aug. 25 of this year.

Gerald was preceded in death by his sister Jewel (Leon) Schlatter. Surviving family members include his wife, Mary Miller; his children, Shari (Charles) Wagner, Marlis (Michael Northern) Miller, and Stephen (Deanna Baker) Miller; his sister, Sally Jo (Ron) Milne; grandchildren, Shea (Kelly) Castle, Kyle (Kara) Castle, Vienna (Adrian) Bottomley, Alexander Miller, and Iona Wagner; great-grandchildren, Penelope Castle, Max Castle, Arthur Bottomley, Alden Bottomley, and Alice Bottomley. Gerald was also the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.

A remembrance service will be held at Marion Christian Fellowship, Shipshewana, Ind., on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation: www.parkinson.org.

On Monday, June 23, 2025, Randy Wayne Hoover passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home at the age of 68.

Randy was born in Huntington, on Oct. 5, 1956, to Herb and Vonnie Hoover. He graduated from Huntington North High School in 1975. Randy worked with his father in their family owned business, Hoover the Mover, for many years. In addition, he worked in the police and sheriff’s departments as an ordinance officer and other capacities. As a city councilman, Randy worked to make the city of Huntington a better place for its citizens, even running for mayor once. He often spoke proudly of the 28 years he portrayed Santa Claus in the area, his huge laugh and personality being a perfect fit. Randy retired from Pendleton Prison in Indiana, where he had served as a correctional officer for seven years.

After living the majority of his life in the Huntington area, including some other nearby towns, he made the move to Tennessee in September 2014. Shortly after, he met and fell in love with Cynthia Jantz. Realizing almost immediately that God had brought them together, Randy and Cindy married on June 15, 2015, in Mackinaw City, Mich., on the bank of Lake Huron. Their marriage was a covenant between God and the two of them. They held God first throughout their marriage.

Randy advocated for others his entire life. The years he spent in Tennessee included volunteering with hospice, a domestic violence center, a su***de prevention organization, along with sharing food and other things with people and families who touched his heart. He loved making children and adults laugh, often at this own expense. Children always held a soft spot in his heart.

Randy had an avid interest in classic cars, Big Foot, UFOs, and the unknown. He also had a love for all things Amish, visiting Shipshewana, many times, always saying he loved the simple life and the clippity clop of the horses. He loved music, especially the music from his youth. His faith was always foremost in his life. Being a Baptist from the time he accepted Christ many years ago, he had been attending church with his wife at St. Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Madison, Tenn., until the time of his passing.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lillian Yvonne (Detwiler) Hoover, and his sister Nancy Hoover Caverly. He is survived by his loving wife of only 10 years, Cynthia Jantz Hoover (Hendersonville, Tenn.); sister, Kathy Connolly (Mel); son, Justin Hoover (Jill), daughter, Haley Bair (Michael); and five grandchildren, Ryenne, Vince, Audrey, Liam, and Tristan (all from Indiana).

Randy wished to be cremated. There will be a memorial service to be announced at St.Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 901 W. Old Hickory Blvd., Madison, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a donation to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt or St. Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Larry E. Green, age 86, of Van Buren, passed away peacefully at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Heritage Pointe in Warren.
He was born in Van Buren to Edward R. Green and Vivian “Isabelle” (Endicott) Green on Jan. 3, 1939. A 1957 graduate of Van Buren High School, Larry went on to work for Indiana Bell (AT&T), where he dedicated 34 years of service before retiring. On Aug. 8, 1958, he married the love of his life, Elsie Mae (Cunningham), and they shared a beautiful marriage until her passing on Dec. 9, 2020.

Larry was a devoted member of Farrville Community Church for approximately 54 years, where he served faithfully and built lasting friendships rooted in faith and kindness. He was a man of quiet strength and gentle wisdom—good-hearted, easy to talk to, and always ready to lend a helping hand. His generous nature and support for his community made him a trusted friend to many.

One of Larry’s greatest joys in life was riding motorcycles. He and Elsie loved taking spontaneous road trips together, often heading out on adventures with no specific destination—just the open road and each other. After her passing, Larry continued to ride and remained actively involved in the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) for 35 years. He held memberships in both Indiana and Florida chapters, participating in countless rides and enjoying many winters in Sarasota, Florida. He was proud to be CMA Member #33,827 and cherished the community and ministry the group brought into his life. His loyal companion and special friend in later years was Shirley Chapman of Marion.

Larry is survived by his children: Ed Green and wife Patti of Livonia, Mich., and Mark Green and wife Sharon of Huntington. His grandchildren include Eric Green of Livonia, Michigan, Laura Green of Knoxville, Tenn., Zachary Green and his wife Mandy Gearhart of Huntington, Alex and her husband Ryan Beeching of Andrews, Samantha and her husband Branden Holder of Noblesville, and sister in law, Sandra Green of Syracuse, Ind.. Larry was also the proud great-grandfather of 10 great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Green, daughter Connie Sue Greenwalt, brother Richard A. “Dick” Green and sister Sara S. O’Neil.

A celebration of Larry’s life will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at Farrville Community Church, located at 11044 E 200 N, Marion. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 4 p.m., officiated by Pastor Al Soultz. All are welcome to remain for a fellowship dinner at the church following the service. Larry will be laid to rest at a later date at Van Buren Cemetery. He was able to have his last wishes fulfilled by donating his body to IU School of Medicine, where he will help current students further their education.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Farrville Community Church, 11044 E 200 N, Marion, IN 46952, or to the Christian Motorcyclists Association – Run for the Son, P.O. Box 9, Hatfield, AR 71945. Please note that donations given in Larry’s name should include his CMA Member Number: 33,827.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ferguson & Glancy Funeral Home in Van Buren.
