Hi All! Welcome to May's A GIRL ON THE GO BANNED BOOK CLUB discussion. Our June pick is LOOKING FOR ALASKA, by John Green.

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words—and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet François Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, who will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Looking for Alaska brilliantly chronicles the indelible impact one life can have on another. A modern classic, this stunning debut marked #1 bestselling author John Green’s arrival as a groundbreaking new voice in contemporary fiction.

Hi All! Welcome to May's A GIRL ON THE GO BANNED BOOK CLUB discussion. Our January pick is CHARLOTTE'S WEB, by E.B. White.

This beloved book by E. B. White, author of Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan, is a classic of children's literature that is "just about perfect." This paperback edition includes a foreword by two-time Newbery-winning author Kate DiCamillo.

Some Pig. Humble. Radiant. These are the words in Charlotte's Web, high up in Zuckerman's barn. Charlotte's spiderweb tells of her feelings for a little pig named Wilbur, who simply wants a friend. They also express the love of a girl named Fern, who saved Wilbur's life when he was born the runt of his litter.

E. B. White's Newbery Honor Book is a tender novel of friendship, love, life, and death that will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. It contains illustrations by Garth Williams, the acclaimed illustrator of E. B. White's Stuart Little and Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series, among many other books.

Hi All! Welcome to January's A GIRL ON THE GO BANNED BOOK CLUB discussion. Our January pick is PARABLE OF THE SOWER, by Octavia E. Butler.

This acclaimed post-apocalyptic novel of hope and terror from an award-winning author "pairs well with 1984 or The Handmaid's Tale" (next month's pick!), and includes a foreword by LeVar Burton and an afterword by N. K. Jemisin (John Green, New York Times).

When global climate change and economic crises lead to social chaos in the early 2020s, California becomes full of dangers, from pervasive water shortage to masses of vagabonds who will do anything to live to see another day. Fifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina lives inside a gated community with her preacher father, family, and neighbors, sheltered from the surrounding anarchy. In a society where any vulnerability is a risk, she suffers from hyperempathy, a debilitating sensitivity to others' emotions.

Precocious and clear-eyed, Lauren must make her voice heard in order to protect her loved ones from the imminent disasters her small community stubbornly ignores. But what begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: the birth of a new faith . . . and a startling vision of human destiny.

Hi All! Welcome to December's A GIRL ON THE GO BANNED BOOK CLUB discussion. Our December pick is BROWN GIRL DREAMING, by Jacqueline Woodson.

Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.

"This is a book full of poems that cry out to be learned by heart. These are poems that will, for years to come, be stored in our bloodstream." --The New York Times Book Review

"A profoundly moving memoir." --San Francisco Chronicle

In conjunction with the A Girl On The Go Banned Book Club, I've opened an affiliate shop on Bookshop.org to have club members purchase their books. If you're not familiar with Bookshop, it's a great site that supports indie bookstores by placing orders for books directly through their stores. When you buy a book through Bookshop, you can choose an indie bookstore from your area that you love, and the orders for the books will be sent through them. Authors benefit, too, by getting a larger chunk of the payment on books than behemoths like Amazon give. It's a win/win all around. As an affiliate I receive 10% of all books sold which will help fund the book club!

I currently have 50 books in my shop, but will be adding more. If you're shopping for Christmas gifts, this is a great way to give back, while supporing indie bookshops, affiliates like me, and free speech.

Until I can have my own dream brick and mortar store on a cute street in a cute area of a cute town (with Hugh Grant as a frequent shopper), this is my start at having a book store that can make a difference in the world.

Please share with friends and thank you for your support!

Girls on the go! Ready to join the fight against censorship? When you join "A Girl On The Go Banned Book Club," you're not only helping to support authors and their work, but you're supporting indie booksellers and the First Amendment, too! Welcome to the club!

Hi All! Welcome to November's A GIRL ON THE GO BANNED BOOK CLUB discussion. Our first book is BEFORE WE WERE FREE, by Julia Alvarez. It's an unforgettable story about adolescence, perseverance, and one girl's struggle to be free while living in the Dominican Republic under the rule of a dictator.

Publishers Weekly calls it, "A stirring work of art."

The Horn Book, Star Review, describes it as, "A realistic and compelling account of a girl growing up too quickly while coming to terms with the cost of freedom."

The book is part historical fiction, but also a story that mirrors her own. See comments below for more information on Julia Alvarez, her books, and a 30-year-old book of hers that was recently banned in Tillamook, Oregon, HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS LOST THEIR ACCENTS.

You can purchase BEFORE WE WERE FREE below, or borrow it through your local library.
