In the late 1930s, WTIC navigated major shifts in the fast-changing world of radio networks and news.
In 1936, WTIC left the New England Network and joined the Boston-based Yankee Network, relying on their newscasts. But by 1938, WTIC realized Connecticut needed its own voice—so they brought back Transradio News and even hosted Transradio’s Connecticut news bureau right in their Hartford studios.
By decade’s end, WTIC offered a powerful blend of national network shows, regional programs, and local features—cementing its reputation for quality content and trusted news coverage.
WTIC didn’t just follow the networks. It made sure Connecticut’s stories were heard.

On May 27, 1928, WTIC launched its first-ever dedicated sports program—“Speaking of Sports”, hosted by Hartford Times sports editor A.B. McGinley.
It was WTIC’s first step into sports commentary, bringing Connecticut fans the latest news and insights straight from the newsroom to the airwaves.
But WTIC didn’t stop there. Just a few weeks later, on June 21, 1928, WTIC aired its first live sports event broadcast—the legendary Yale vs. Harvard Regatta from New London, and even fed the broadcast to the NBC network.
This was just the beginning of WTIC’s sports broadcasting legacy, which continues to this day.

On February 10, 1925, at 7:45 PM, WTIC-AM officially signed on the air for the first time! Broadcasting on 860 kHz with a mighty 500 watts, WTIC introduced itself as Connecticut’s newest radio voice.
Vice President Walter G. Cowles of Travelers Insurance (WTIC’s original owner) gave the opening address. The “TIC” in WTIC? Yep—it stands for Travelers Insurance Company.
Listeners enjoyed live performances from the Mendelssohn Glee Club and other musical acts in a formal debut that marked the beginning of a broadcasting legacy.
From this first night on the air, WTIC began its journey as “The Voice of Connecticut.”
