🍑 “Beginnings, Community & the Joy of Local Food”
Today we invite you to take a moment with us to reflect on roots and beginnings. In the feature “Beginnings: A Journey Through Community”, photographer, storyteller and co-founder of Carole Topalian shares how her journey started in Santa Barbara, guided by a wise aunt who told her to “shoot fruit” — and how that simple nudge blossomed into a celebration of our region’s farms, people and flavors.

Here in Ventura County, our food isn’t just about what’s on the plate: it’s about the hands that harvested it, the stories that flowed between neighbors, the connections made at market tables and kitchen counters. It’s about community. 🌿
Let’s celebrate our beginnings — the farms, the makers, the community that makes our food meaningful. Tag someone who grows, cooks or brings food that connects you to place.

From cactus blossoms to sunset pollinations, dragon fruit is proving its wild beauty and its sweet payoff in Ventura County. 🌈

Alik Shulman (formerly Shulman Dragon Fruit Orchard/Nature with Alik) grows around 50 varieties, hand-pollinates nightly, and shares this tropical magic with folks at farmers’ markets and online. Locally grown = fresh, juicy, and full of life.

Want to taste or grow your own? Try his dragon fruit lemonade (fresh fruit, lemon, mint, agave) — or check for cuttings and plants if you want a piece of the orchard at home.
